    Firefox Strikes

Flipped on the computer this morning and found that Firefox, without permission or consent, has taken it upon itself to install FIREFOX QUANTUM (57) all by itself.
All my settings and addons are gone. Everything to get it just how I wanted it, is gone. No chance to say no thank you to the upgrade, nothing.
    Pretty ballsy of Mozilla.
I will be changing to Vivaldi today.
Who the hell do they think they are?

That simply doesn’t happen. If FF was updated, it’s because it was included in updated packages that you allowed to be downloaded and installed.

Well when I first turned on the computer it was the Firefox I set up and liked.
It froze and I rebooted, and then I had Quantum.

The move to Quantum and its consequences was the topic of many tech sites for quite a few months. Sorry it took you unawares!

Understand, but prior to this, you (or apt) checked for, downloaded and installed, package updates, of which, FF was included.

However, let’s both be clear on the subject: What version (version number) of FF were you running ‘before’ this observed change happened, and what is the version now?

Can't tell you what it was before but now it is 57

I just looked at my new old computer and noted that I had and used FF 55.02.
I suspect my version on this computer was the same.

Is there a way to revert while I get my new old computer going with Vivaldi?

I believe that before any major change of any program it should ask you if you want to do it before it proceeds.

Whichever browser you choose, make sure you monitor its support forum so that you aren't taken unawares. For vivaldi, it's https://forum.vivaldi.net/. All the best!

I never cared much for FireFox, to be honest, that was due to the massive memory usage. They are stating FFQ is 2 times faster and 30% less memory. If that is true, I would consider giving it a try. However I don't care much for browsers and web services that assert their "applications" without other options other than dropping it altogether. If you desire to keep using FireFox as it was before, there are known distribution tweaks. I have used one to keep my GIMP at 2.6 when they messed up 2.8.

I currently use Chrome and Chromium for most my needs, but if you are looking for something more akin to FF, I read QupZilla is a very good QtWebEngine browser.

On my machine FF57 is taking 185K and a child process labeled "Web" is taking 75K.

Yep, FF57 showed up on my desktop machine last night, too. At first FF was locked up, so i restarted it and then FF57 showed itself. So I'm looking at it to see how it goes. Yes, my favorite addons are gone, but at least it was running. the only thing I've changed so far is that abysmal default theme. Someone on the other FF thread was complaining about the Download arrow showing up only when an actual download was running. I like that feature. It's not earth shattering either way, but it makes sense. So far it's O.K.

It would appear the "Web" child process is something to do with tabs opened.

FF used 135K with 55K for Web. Now with two tabs added FF is 240K, Webs are 77K & 57K.

I can't speak to how your system is set up, or where you obtained FF at first. I can tell you on mine, at every upgrade in FF from the beginning to 54, 55, 56, and then to 57 (including a few point releases) happened exactly the same in every case. I personally don't think the move to FF57 is any more significant than any other FF release. It's well known what Mozilla was going to do. It's been discussed, almost ad nauseum, here and on many other fora. So far I like it, and so far it's not any different than what Mozilla publicly set out to do.

Each one of us is free to use any browser we want that works in Linux. I had set up Vivaldi some time ago, just in case FF wasn't what I expected. I'm still using FF, and fully anticipate using it until it shows something that is unusable and unfixable. I won't tell you what to do, you're free to do what you want.

Ballsy - no. Expected - yes. Received - as advertised. Still checking, every day.

I will no more put up with ANY program altering my computer (without my direct permission) anymore than I would someone coming in to the house without my direct permission.
