Java activation in Firefox

An identification system, using a "credit card" type in an usb "holder" requires Java.

As instructed by the provider, I have installed Java 8.

But when I try using the card for identification, I get "Java not activated " (in Norwegian).

A quick look in Synaptic Pacage Manager tells me that Java indeed is installed.

So, my question is: How do I activate Java in Firefox?

Second - should I upgrade to Java 9?

If you are running FF52 there is a workaround, a way to enable Java, NPAPI plugins in Firefox 52 using an about:config setting. dd new Boolean string "plugin.load_flash_only" and set it to false. Then restart the browser. That’s it; assuming your NPAPI plugins are installed correctly they should work as before. FF53 blocks this workaround. The FF ESR release is good only for another year so if the workaround works on FF52 then a good idea would be to lock it using Muon or Synaptic so that FF52 cannot be upgraded later.
