    System Updates

    Hello Again,

Just this minute I noticed a new icon in my task bar. Investigating, the tool tip said that I needed to reboot my system for the updates to be effective. This is news to me. Under version 16.04 does the system updater work automatically in the background, instigating updates as and when, or as soon as, they become available?

I agree it is best to keep the system up to date but I prefer the previous 14.04 system where there was a notification in the task bar and you could take the necessary action when it best suited you.

Just a thought, when using my system, I do so as an "ordinary" user without admin privileges. Under 14.04 when updating the system I did so as the admin full privileges user. If the system has been updated whilst I am logged in as Mr Ordinary have the necessary amendments also been made for the administrator user?

    Thanks

    Roy

It depends on your settings in the Software Sources dialog.

To get to this dialog click on "Application update notifier" in the system tray, then click on "More" at the bottom, choose Advanced, Configure Software Sources. On the "Updates" tab, I'm guessing you have "Install security updates without confirmation" and you may also have "Download all updates in the background" radio buttons checked. Uncheck both of those to restore manual control over updates as you had before. On my system (K14.04) I have "Check for updates:" --> Daily and "Only notify about available updates" checked. Also, in the "Release upgrade" section I have "Show new distribution releases:" --> Never.

Hello Rod J, thank you for your help, all now sorted.

Just in case anyone else with the same query reads this I will just add ...

On my machine right clicking on the updates notifier did not bring up anything useful like a more button. Just in case it only applied to the administrator account I logged in as admin with the same result. However checking the applications menu I found
system -> update manager clicking on that brought up the dialog with the more button and choosing advanced settings from the drop down menu gave me the choices Rod J gives in his post. All sorted
