Very SLOW shut down/reboot

I have a Kubuntu 16.04.1
CPU: Intel Core i5-4590 CPU @ 4x 3.7GHz
GPU: GeForce GTX 970
NVIDIA-SMI 361.42 Driver Version: 361.42

Ever since switching to nvidia from nouveau, the shut down/reboot is atrocious.
A fresh install was fine but installing nvidia does this

Here's a chronological list of a reboot:

In a console issue:
sudo systemd-analyze blame
and examine the output. The listing will be in the order of most time used to least time used.

Adding the times you can see that it takes over a minute for my system to boot up to the login screen and another minute for a working desktop to appear. It takes that long or more to shut down.

But my shutdown is 120 sec and from post to desktop another 60 sec

sudo systemctl stop ModemManager.service
sudo systemctl disable ModemManager.service

Now sudo systemd-analyze blame yields (3.5 sec)??

Carla Schroder does an excellent job in describing how to clean your system in this article.

It explains the commonly used services, what they do, why you need them or not, and how to disable the ones you decided that you don't need.

Your biggies are:

ModemManager.service is a DBus-activated daemon that controls mobile broadband (2G/3G/4G) interfaces. If you don't have a mobile broadband interface -- built-in, paired with a mobile phone via Bluetooth, or USB dongle -- you don't need this.

● gpu-manager.service - Detect the available GPUs and deal with any system changes

and you stopped and disabled the first. You can also uninstall it.

You have both an intell internal gpu and a secondary gpu, NVIDIA. Is your NVIDIA selectable in the BIOS to be the prime gpu? If so, then set the BIOS to make it the primary GPU. (Mine wasn't, so I had to use BumbleBee to use it to run graphical apps that I wanted to accelerate).

This article explains how to use BumbleBee. Once you get your GPU configured properly I suspect that your account services and other lags will resolve themselves.

Great article. I will test disabling various services and return with my results.

It shaved off some seconds but still 2 min to reboot.

Tried KDE Neon 5.7.5 on another partition and wow, less than 20 seconds for full reboot.

Then I installed nVidia drivers and now it is slow just like Kubuntu is. WIth the same black screen at about the 40 sec point. +2min to get to POST.

This seems to come down to nVidia and systemd.

14.10 has no problem and is very fast to reboot.

But 16.04 with nVidia drivers seems to cause this. (on Kubuntu,Neon and Mate)

I'm not finding much on google.

Accounts-daemon.service is pulled in by graphical.target. The gpu-manager.service "Detect the available GPUs and deal with any system changes". setvrgb.service is also related to your display.
All four are having problems setting themselves up with either/or NVIDIA or Intell's GPU.

You have a config problem, probably on your NVIDIA, since Intel usually uses the i915 driver.
