    google earth again

I have just upgraded from 14.04 to 16.04 without any problems so far. It runs smooth and does what 14.04 used to do. However, I can't seem to install Google Earth any more. After using the step described here:

    http://www.webupd8.org/2014/04/insta...untu-1404.html

I get a note at the end that says this:

    Package lsb-core is not installed.

dpkg: error processing package google-earth-stable:i386 (--install):
    dependency problems - leaving unconfigured
Processing triggers for menu (2.1.47ubuntu1) ...
    Processing triggers for man-db (2.7.5-1) ...
    Processing triggers for mime-support (3.59ubuntu1) ...
    Processing triggers for desktop-file-utils (0.22-1ubuntu5) ...
    Errors were encountered while processing:
    google-earth-stable:i386
    steve@steve-desktop:/tmp$

From what I can see, lsb-core is the problem; it doesn't seem to exist anymore. Any suggestions?

I can't/won't testify to this, but https://ubuntu-mate.community/t/inst...ntu-16-04/5268 describes how to get the 'missing' packages needed for Google Earth to install on 16.04. The three missing packages are from 15.10, but should work. I cannot say with any certainty what issues may or may not arise later, but these are separate packages, so could just as easily be uninstalled.
Windows no longer obstructs my view.

I installed the 3 packages and Google Earth installed correctly. Thanks for the tip.

Note: My system is a fresh install of 16.04 on top of Btrfs, not an upgrade from any previous release. it does have i32 architecture enabled. It may be that files carried over during an upgrade of a previous version may have allowed a successful install of Google-Earth. Or, something related to Btrfs may have prevented it in my case.

Following the method given in Snowhog's link failed to install Google-Earth, giving a "missing dependency" for the lsb-core file linked at that site. The repository does not contain either the 64 or the 32bit lsb-core package.

The repository does have a "googleearth-package". Installing it creates a "make-googleearth-package" program which has to be run a the user, not root. Doing so creates the "googleearth_6.0.3.2197+1.2.0-1_amd64.deb" installation package. Running sudo -i googleearth_6.0.3.2197+1.2.0-1_amd64.deb ends with the following msg:

        Unpacking googleearth (6.0.3.2197+1.2.0-1) ...

The lack of lsb-core kills the process no matter which route I try.

I have, like others since 9.04, relied on Google Maps. During my three month foray into Mint 17.3 KDE4 the GoogleEarth package also failed to install. Prior to 9.04 GoogleEarth began to fail when it would crash during second and subsequent search operations. That issue was never resolved, except by closing GE and trying another search. Rinse and repeat. it got to be such a pain I went to Google Maps and never returned to GE.

The lsb-core package can be installed if you download it for 15.10 -- I think. I saw a post somewhere about this issue.

            And this as well?
            googleearth depends on libcurl3:i386;
which is not in 16.04's repository.

I am in no rush. I'll wait until the "make-googleearth-package" is updated to contain all the necessary files. Google Maps works just fine for now.

Or you could install PCLinuxOS, it has Google Earth pre-installed.

I ran PCLinuxOS for almost two years. Nice distro. However, GoogleEarth is not a reason to switch, especially since Google Maps gives me the same capabilities, at least the ones I use, via a browser.

It might be better to install the 16.04 versions as I just did.... Just make sure ubuntu-updates and Canonical partners repositories are enabled. I did try downloading and installing the 15.10 versions on one machine, but when I used gdebi to install a printer driver that needed lsb, it detected the old lsb packages and downloaded and installed the newer packages from one of those repositories. On a second system, I just enabled them, and the new versions of lsb-core etc. showed up in the packages list.

There seems to be lsb-core in xenial updates now

My list does not contain those APT lines. Thanks for posting them!

EDIT: My mistake, the US server version of those lines are in my source.list. Muon changed its display style and lists those lines on the first tab of the repository where they can't be edited or removed. The "Updates" page allows one to add repositories but those repositories listed on the first tab are not listed on the second.

Bottom line, lsb-core IS NOT available in my source list. It may be that my Kubuntu PPA for Plasma 5.5.6 is blocking them.
So, attempting to install the downloaded version of GoogleEarth or the make-googleearth-package version in the repository both fail for multiple reasons.

Should not be the case, unless you are using an odd mirror that is taking a long while to propagate to/sync.

plasma/kubuntu ppas do not block it.

From a fully updated Xenial install which I switched back from the GB servers to the main ones.

Everything is the same except for the sources.list. I've never looked at mine before. The only changes made were adding the PPA manually using apt, and enabling all options in the Muon repository list.
I reference the us.archive and you reference the gb.archive.

The packages are in in the pool on your http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu mirror, and in the Release files for it.

                              http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/...niverse/l/lsb/

Could still be on a phased update at the moment perhaps.

It shifted to the updates pocket from proposed on 1st July
