Unlock/lock widgets / task manager adjustments freezing up computer

Hello, first post after using Kubuntu for a couple of months

I just upgraded from 15.10 to 16.04 and try to make adjustments to the task bar, as well as unlock/lock widgets, and the computer freezes up. Any ideas as to what may be causing this?

    Thanks

how did you do the upgrade ?

did you keep your old /home/you and are still using it ?

have you done a check of upgradeable packages yet ,,,,,,,,,,,,,
    Code:
    sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
    ?

I updated through the Muon Update Manager. I didn't make any partition changes.

I ran the upgradeable package check, removed obsolete packages, and restarted. The problem is still occurring. When I click unlock widgets I hear a tone and an empty transluscent box that is empty appears above the task manager. Then the computer hangs.

can you create a new user ,,,,,,,log in to that user ,,,, and see if the probles are their as well .

IF not then it's some conflicting .config in your old /home/you ,,,,,,,,, and we can start checking that.

I created a new user and was able to unlock/lock widgets and get into all of the taskbar settings without a problem, so it must be a conflict with my settings from 15.10.

ok then ,,,,,,,,,,you want to rename ,,,,one at a time (so we know which directory contains the offending configs ) the directories .config , .kde , .local and .cache rename them as such ,,,,,,, .config to .config.old and so on ,,,,,,,new default ones will be recreated on login ,,,,,, do this from a TTY .

log out ,,,,at the login screen ,,,,,, press ctrl+alt+F6 ,,,,you will get a text login ,,,,log in ,,,,,,,,,do
            Code:
            mv .config .config.old
press "ctrl+alt+F7" you should be back at the GUI login screen ,,,,,,log in and test...... if good .config was the prob ,,,,,,,if not do it again with the next one in the list.

cool ,,,,,,,you could start moving things inside .config.old back to .config to find the exact file/setting ,,,,,,but hay why,,,,,

I didn't have too much stuff set up on the old version, so I just have been adjusting the refreshed .config. Thanks for your help, Vinny.

                      Possibly related issue

I'm also having a problem with the unlock/lock on my laptop after upgrading to Xenial. If I lock the screen and start using Screen Energy Saving, the lock screen freezes when I go back to it. The mouse will move, but clicking doesn't do anything. When I try to Tab over to the password box, the keyboard doesn't do anything, but Ctrl + Alt + F1 works.

I created a new profile and it shows the same behavior. Manually killing the process in TTY 1 doesn't result in anything useful happening, so I need to reboot.

dmesg and /var/log/kern.log don't show anything obviously useful that I can see. I tried both with and without amd64-microcode installed, and it happens in both cases.

apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade both return nothing to do.

Any thoughts on where to go to find more info?

                      Thanks!
