Well I just pooped myself!

I opened up Dolphin and it looked like I had lost my entire home directory and Dolphin wouldn't finish reading it. Not being one to panic I opened Yakuake and did an ls which also just sat there. That's when I panicked! Then I remembered that I take regular backups and have been goofing off today so I rebooted with the worst case scenario of a full data restore.

Everything is working on reboot and I have found no forensic evidence for what happened. I like Xenial overall but I'm not sure I can handle the excitement.

yep, first to a usb thumb drive, and thence to a normally unpluged and unpowered external hard drive.

That......after........one time, I installed a fresh os and forgot to unplug the data drive! it installed the fresh os on BOTH devices, lol.

Fortinately I had almost all of it on cds.

but i learned quick!

I have only lost my data once due to a hard disk failure. That was the day I learned that taking backups isn't enough, you have to make sure they have worked
