Testing 16.04.4 ,64 bit, LTS on a LiveDVD

    Hello

I managed to burn the iso file using Brasero

I notice on the splash screen a background of black dots (symmetrical squares). Should they be there?

I am having some graphics anomalies. Some long flashes on the screen; and odd juddering when I turn the mouse wheel.

I believe that I will need to make some software adjustments via kubuntu to complement my graphics card. Advice needed here.

I will need to get these points addressed in the LIveDVD before I consider an installation.

I will repost if I see other anomalies as I test the software.

    Best wishes

Ps. The flashing is very distracting

    UPDATE.

I can't find the software repository, rather like in version 14). I don't think much of Discover. I note that k3b is the default burner in 16, I would like to see Brasero as well

Still getting flashing and odd geometric shapes. I can't see how to adjust the graphics in the LiveDVD

    Can't find the Terminal.

      UPDATE (still using the liveDVD)

I have found that changing the compositor settings seems to have eliminated the graphics instability. But now I cant' connect to the Internet. On occasions when I can connect, the connection drops quickly.

I have no difficulty connecting to the internet using the installed version 14.04.

Can someone advise regarding the compositor settings that will ensure graphics stability, and how to connect to the internet, and maintain the connection.

      Thanks

The LiveDVD keeps disconnecting form the internet, and connecting is difficult. It looks like I will not be able to install version 16

How does this look (Running the live DVD ver 16.04.4: 64 bit)

          kubuntu@kubuntu:~$ iwconfig
          lo no wireless extensions.

          enp0s25 no wireless extensions.

Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
          Tx excessive retries:64 Invalid misc:25 Missed beacon:0

NB. I thought that I switched the power management off in the live dvd!

          Waiting for the wi-fi disconnection

          Compositor settings

          Rendering backend: XRender
Tearing: Full Screen Repaints (seems to prevent the graphics anomalies) - evidently can make system unstable

I believe that I switched the ipv6 to ignore in the livedvd

Just got disconnected. But reconnection easy. I have checked the energy saving option and every thing is now switched off

According to iwconfig: Power Management is ON. How can I switch it off, if this is desirable

It seems that I am given about 10 minutes before the wi-fi connection drops. I can then reconnect

            Graphics seem stable

            Any advice gratefully received

Perhaps you can adjust some "parms". See the following post:

Yes, they will always be there. I have the same Nvidia that you have, and you lose the nice splash screen that is built in because the crappy "DOS" style one comes up before the Nvidia starts up. Not only will you have it at boot, but also at shutdown. And it is usually semi-verbose and flashes colors in the text. Super ugly and very 1980. You are not crazy, nothing is broken, that's how it works. I'm on 14.04 by the way and this has always been the case with Kubuntu for me. It did not do this in Mint KDE though.

I will collect the data the next time I have the livedvd running.

                      What are 'parms'

Do you mean run 'lspci' when the livedvd is running?

I don't much like the graphic either. I wonder if it can be changed.

My interest in upgrading is due to the assumption that there will be fewer bugs in the more up to date OS. In addition, when kubuntu stops producing updates I will have to migrate from 14.04 (current OS); although updates will stop in 16.04.4 at the same time, it might be easier to update online.

At present, my concern is trying to maintain a connection to the router that lasts longer than about 10 mins (using a livedvd). I believe that I can switch the power management off by using: sudo iwconfig wlan0 power off. My current OS has power off. I wonder if this is accounts for the disconnection.

                        Best wishes

I produced the following data for someone on another board who is trying to help.

I post it below it case it gives a hint regarding my disconnection issues.

The data were produced while using tihe installed kubuntu OS ver 14.04

Nothing is unusual about your wlan0 settings. Here's mine:

                            Here's my routing table:

So, our configs are pretty much the same what does the output of dmesg show just after the wlan0 link goes down?

Also, you have nohwcrypt=N, which turns ON hardware encryption. Set it to nohwcrypt=1 to turn encryption off and see if that helps.

(The 169.254.0.0 is a link-local address which I use for connecting to local devices that don't use DHCP or DHCP fails. It is defined in /etc/networks)

So, our configs are pretty much the same what does the output of dmesg show just after the wlan0 link goes down?

Also, you have nohwcrypt=N, which turns ON hardware encryption. Set it to nohwcrypt=1 to turn encryption off and see if that helps.
First, In kubuntu 14.04 I have power off, but in the live dvd, it looks like the the power is on. Can I do any harm by typing into the terminal in the live dvd: sudo iwconfig wlan0 power off, to see if that prevents my disconnection.

I will run the livedvd and check the dmesg as well as the free -h

I don't know how to set nohwcrypt. I would have thought that nohwcrypt=N would turn encryption off. Are there other factors to consider in turning hardware encryption on or off?

                              Regards
