unable to find a medium containing a live file system
Well, my latest download of the 64bit Kubuntu (labelled as amd) seems to have worked perfectly this time.

IP communications only determine that an IP packet is recieved and ACKed before the next packet is sent. There is no parity checking to correct bit errors. Thus the need to do a checksum once the file has been downloaded. The checksum value MUST be from the same site and for the same ISO that was downloaded because, as you probably suspect, each ISO has its own checksum and that value changes as the ISO is updated with a point release.
