Display is very blocky and pixulated

Hello all, I've been away from Linux for several years. I downloaded Kubuntu to run on my HP all in one and loaded it to a USB to run it from. Once it loads the display is very blocky and pixulated like a computer from the 80's while my windows 10 is sharp and clear. I've tried some of the display settings and resolution settings and nothing changes. It does say it is in LAPTOP mode and I can change it to desktop.

Is there an easy way to make this work?

    Thank you

Rubbing my crystal ball I seem unable to divine what kind of computer you have and what its components are!
Perhaps you could supply the results to
    lspci
    and
    lshw

Or, check your Settings -->Display and Monitor-->Compositor
and select a different "Rendering Backend".

Your GPU is "4th Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller", similar to mine. lshw gives your GPU "bus info: pci@0000:00:01.0"

        My video driver is i915
lshw gives the GPU bus info as "bus info: pci@0000:3f:02.1"

pci:v00008086d0000160A is the Vendor and Device numbers which, for your driver, should contain your vendor and device number

The "parm" are parameters one can change to suit their needs, if necessary. I leave mine at the default settings.
One can create a conf file in /etc/modprobe.d/, say, i915.conf, and in it put, for example:
        options enable_guc_submission=true
        options guc_log_level=0
        ....

for the parms you think might be helpful.

You can use lsmod in a Konsole and examine the output to see what your actual video dirver is. If you have any doubts about a particular driver you can use modinfo to see what its description is, just like that shown in for the i915 driver.

You're welcome. What distros have you tried on your hardware? I found Mint 17.3 KDE (based on 14.04) to be a very good distro. I've also had good experiences with openSUSE, PCLinuxOS and Mepis.

                A few things to try:
                1) changing the compositer:
Open "System Settings" --> Display And Monitor --> Compositer
Change "Rendering Backend" to a method different from what you are using. There are three types: OpenGL 3.1, OpenGL2.0 and XRender.

                2) Adding an xserver config setting:
                Create file:
                /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf
                add the following code:
                Code:
                Section "Device"
                   Identifier "Intel Graphics"
                   Driver "intel"
                   Option "AccelMethod" "uxa"
                EndSection
Log off and log back on (or reboot)

The System Settings is a menu option: Left click the K-Gear, then click "Settings", then "System Settings". On the System Settings GUI locate "Display and Monitor" near the bottom. Left click on it and then left click on the "Compositor" icon in the left panel. In the right panel left click on the drop down combo labeled "Rendering Backend" and select one of the other two. Might try Xrender first. Left click the "Apply" button in the lower right corner.
                    Close the System Setting GUI.

Try that setting for a while. If it gives you problems then select the other setting and click the apply button. If none of the three rendering backends work for you then return it to the GLX 3.1 setting with the GLX method and click the apply button. Then we'll go through the other procedure.
