    Login password rejected

After managing to find a workaround with the language problem in time and dates on the login screen I've posted about here I finally added a second keyboard language. After the first reboot it seemed to work just fine and there was even a language indicator on the login screen which I found very convenient.

Trying to login again today, ten hours later, some things have unexpectedly changed.

The language indicator is gone. I have no idea if what I'm typing is in English or the alt-language I set up.
My password keeps showing at the wrong one. I tried numerous times and even rebooted a couple of times in case it was a bootup cockup. Nothing changed.
The time delay after getting the password wrong isn't working. I can retype the password as soon as I want.

I don't remember changing anything special about the installation to cause this, it had been working fine until I shut it down for the night. I wouldn't consider this a huge problem (even though I've never had something like this happen with 10.04 in over six years) but given how I'd like to use an encrypted home folder because I'm dual booting with the spyware called windows10, this is completely unacceptable.

Any ideas what could have gone wrong? I suspect the language switched from English to my alt one with no option to switch back. The login screen seems to be very bugged in this manner and doesn't really work well with location settings at all.
