    Screens freezing - AMD-GPU?

After I built a machine and gave my old PC to my brother KDE began making trouble. My screens always freezed after some minutes. First I thought it's just because I have new hardware but now I want to know it.

I recently installed the new Kubuntu 16.04 succesfully I thought that it now will work because Ubuntu and his forks are known for compatibility with new hardware. After some clicks (again 5 to 20 min) in Kubuntu 16.04 it freezes my screens and shows tearing and some weird color patterns. The suspect is the GPU. I wanted to install the proprietary GPU-Driver but the driver-settings don't recognise my hardware. Here my hardware:
    - Asus Motherboard VIII Ranger
    - Intel i6700
    - Radeon R9 390
    - dual-monitors 2x2560x1440

I installed for tests Manjaro 15.12 with XFCE and it runned well, the KDE version of Manjaro failed during install. Are there known problems with KDE and AMD-GPUs? please help. I want to know why KDE doesn't work.

Skylake processors are known to have issues on Linux.

    You can:
    1) install intel-microcode and reboot and see if it fixes your issues.
    2) if that doesn't help try with newest kernel from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/?C=N;O=D (4.5.2 version).

BTW catalyst drivers are not supported in 16.04 so you have to use default opensource one.

Sorry when I am digging up this thread. I just want to tell how I proceeded.

I have installed (with terminal) the Skylake-microcode like schnelle recommended. That doesn't solve it. Next I was looking forward to install the newest kernel. But I became frustrated and lazy therefore I still only used Windows.

Today I visited the forum and read some threads. I saw that some people still use Kubuntu 14.04 and this version has a catalyst driver. So I installed Kubuntu 14.04. The interesting point is that Kubuntu 14.04 without fglrx had the same issues like 16.04. Now I am happy to have a Kubuntu that doesn't crash.

--> Radeon R9 390X probably have issues without proprietary drivers

Yea you will have to wait for AMD to get something going to move to 16.04... the proprietary drivers have not been updated since december 2015, but they do work good for me with 14.04.
Come on AMD... can I file a bug report for a lack of driver support?

The AMDGPU-Pro driver is coming along and it's supposed to release at the end of June or early July. You can install it today (See relevant posts on Phoronix as to how) in 16.04 but it requires a newer kernel than the one shipped with 16.04. IIRC, as of now the AMDGPU-Pro driver supports OpenGL 4.1,4.2, 4.3, 4.4, and 4.5. The recommendation would be to just wait for 16.10 which would have a newer kernel and the AMDGPU driver will have had more time to bake. Alternatively, as the OP stated, 14.04 with FGLRX driver works well and it's what I'm using now.

Finally, one could install 16.04 and update the kernel and do the necessary steps to get the new driver working, but unless one wanted to help with testing or just do some exercises in kernel building (nothing wrong with that) it's probably better to just wait. However, if you're curious, have a look at http://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-arti...ase-Notes.aspx

Is it possible to upgrade later from 14.04 to 16.10 or is in this case a new installation necessary (with USB and ISO)?

For gaming i still use windows. First I want to become more familiar with Kubuntu/Linux so I can wait for 16.10.

Well that AMDGPU driver does not do anything for me ... my 7k series is not on the list.
Updates wanted for the crimson 15.12 that applies to more cards.

AND now you've hit the crux of AMD on Ubuntu-based distros at the moment. 14.04 with proprietary drivers are your friend. Or go to a more bleeding edge distro. Or stick with the open source drivers, which are pretty darn good.
