    Hang on...
There was no mention of KRDC when setting up a new network in the network settings.

The "server" is the remote computer you want to connect to using KRDC on your "client" laptop/desktop. KRDC and KRFB work together, although KRDC can connect to a computer running KRFB, VNC or RDP, among others.

In the image above KRDC is on the left and KRFB is on the right. KRFB is run on the computer you want to connect to. KRDC is run on the computer in front of you. KRFB is a VNC so that is the setting you will want to use. Also, this pair uses port 5900 so you will have to open your firewall (on both machines) to that port for two way traffic. If you have a firewall on your router you'll need to open it up on port 5900 as well.

I think I'm following it so far.
I've set my router to allow the port.
when I enter the address of the computer I want to connect to and press the connect button. all I get is a blue screen and no request for a password.

Just trying to clarify some details
The address I enter in the firewall rules, are they the internal IP addresses, 192.168.XXX.XXX or the external ones shown in KRFB?
I ask because do I set up a bi-directional firewall rule UPD/TCP with a range or Individual incoming single address and individual outgoing singe address
If they're the external ones, how do I find the (external) ip address for the machine running KRDC?

            Sorted it.
I enter 192.168.0.XX (NOT the external address it gives me - the one shown in the KRFB window) into the 'computer to connect to' and then it asks me for the password. I enter that and then it connects.
