    EMachine WIFI support

    Hi
I am testing the live USB on a freinds e-machine 720 laptop. He wants to get rid of Vista and wants me to put Kubuntu 16.04 on it.

Having tested the live usb evrything works except wifi.

As far as I can tell it uses a broadcom card.

Does anyone have experience with this laptop?

    kubuntu@kubuntu:~$ iwconfig
    enp5s0 no wireless extensions.

    lo no wireless extensions.

While in the Live environment, did you attempt to identify/active the driver through the Driver Manager?

Hi Snowhog, it has been a long time

You mean system settings-> driver manager? yes. Just a bar telling me: collecting information about your system.

      Nothing happens No, information nada.

Same on the installed 16.04 on my laptop.

I don't think that would help anyway. No ethernet.

So what do you think about this:

      firmware-b43-lpphy-installer_015-9_all.deb

      or

      firmware-b43-installer_015-9_all.deb

      ?

Yes, that 'behavior' of Driver Manager is a known 'bug'. If you open a konsole and type: sudo update-apt-xapian-index and let it finish, then relaunching Driver Manager will/should now work.

Ok. did that. seems to work, at the wfi manager is picking up the card and signals. BUt when I connect and start FF for example, nada.

Do you have an IP I can try to ping?

              Thanks.

I got the issue solved. running off a mobile hotspot seems to block both of these laptops when connected at the same time. so I had to disconnect mine and reconnect the test machine. works

Will go for some more tests and post back.

                Ok. stange issue here.

Installed 16.04 on the emachine. install went well.

                Did
                Code:
                [FONT=Monospace]sudo update-apt-xapian-index[/FONT]
                started driver manager. Nada.

Did a reboot and reran the code.

Now driver manager tells me: no proprietory drivers needed.

                Very confusing.

                Cheers
                F

                Edit:

                iwconfig gives:

                enp5s0 no wireless extensions.

                lo no wireless extensions.

lspci gives the same as before.

By chance, does the PC have a hard switch to turn on/off wireless?

Open a konsole. Run dmesg. Push the button. Run dmesg. Is there an entry concerning wifi 'at the end' of the output?
