I have a Motorola smart phone which worked fine under 14.04 but since I've made an upgrade to 16.04 it can no longer be read. It used to be able to connect directly to Digikam but now I only get one option: open with File Manager. When I click on that, I get an error message: unable to create IO-slave, unable to find kio kamera plug-in. When I go to the digital camera section of System Settings, it says it cannot find the proper shared library. I suspect this might be related to the upgrade process and wonder what I should do to be able to download photos from my camera again.

Hi!
Hope that you are having a good day other than with the camera!
I'm sure that someone will be along that has more expertise than me, but I had this problem with my Samsung SII a couple of years ago and it was a problem with the MTP protocol, and your post has got me to thinking that I may have the same problem, and I was planning to transfer pics this next week!
Anyway, here is the page for MTP at the Arch Wiki with suggestions for troubleshooting, sorry I couldn't give a definitive answer.
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/MTP
Particularly for KDE it uses what is known as the MTP Kio Slave.

Or, less Kubuntu-ish, install Airdroid on your phone, then use a browser on Kubuntu to connect to the phone. Best if computer and phone are on the same network. IMO Airdroid is brilliant, not just copying stuff... f. ex. send text messages by typing them in Kubuntu.

Thanks to both of you for responding. I've been away for 3 days, and just got around to trying KDE Connect. It worked fine, although it crashed 3 times. Still, I was able to get all the photos downloaded to my computer, plus a short video. Now, if I can just get rid of all 'archivo enviado' messages on my phone easily...

I like KDE Connect for my phone. But for my digital camera, after 15.04 upgrade the "Open in Digikam" was missing from the SD card pop up. I needed to add Digikam manually to SD Card actions thanks to the help of people here. I can't remember how but a search should find it.
