    Dolphin not working

Had to re-install. Now Dolphin not working when I run it under kdesuo or sudo. I get an error message "The file process protocol died unexpectedly" - I wrote that from memory and so it may not be exactly correct. Never had this problem before the re-install. But now Dophin is unusable as 'root' because it is no longer able to display any directory.

Did Google on the error and found out that it cropped back several versions ago and that there were workarounds, none of which work now. Has this problem re-surfaced or is something from the past biting me?

    Is this error coming back?

Does anybody know of a solution/fix?

Yes - just installed and updated yesterday.

Btw, if you have to run it as root only run it under kdesudo, not sudo read here why:
    https://www.kubuntuforums.net/showth...l=1#post383488

You are probably better off to, under Settings- Services, install the Root Action Servicemenu by kubicle.
Then you can right-click a file and select Root Actions etc.
Have been using kdesudo for a long time now. - Thanks.

Tried uninstalling and re-installing. Getting the following output now:

Btw, if you have to run it as root only run it under kdesudo, not sudo read here why:

You are probably better off to, under Settings- Services, install the Root Action Servicemenu by kubicle.
Then you can right-click a file and select Root Actions etc.
I installed the Root Action Servicemenu by Kubicle, but there is nothing there, i.e., I right click on a file and only get the normal services loaded when I installed Kubuntu. No Root actions. I checked the manual installation instructions and the service menus are installed in the proper directories, but nothing.

(After installing the root actions as you have already done, then ...)

          Maybe try:

          Open Dolphin
          Settings tab
          Configure Dolphin
Services (on the left side bar menu)
and check the right boxes (Root Actions ... all boxes that apply).

This can be caused by a general service menu bug [https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=350769].

The bug is fixed upstream, but I don't think the fix has arrived in kubuntu yet.

            1. Check whether your machine has the file /usr/share/kservicetypes5/konqpopupmenuplugin.desktop
            2. If not, link the the kde4 version with "sudo ln -s /usr/share/kde4/servicetypes/konqpopupmenuplugin.desktop /usr/share/kservicetypes5/konqpopupmenuplugin.desktop"
            3. Restart dolphin and the service menus should show up (if installed correctly)

Also, if you wish to use the root actions service menu, I currently recommend downloading and installing the latest version (2.8.7) manually...the dolphin service installation seems to download and install a really old version (2.7.3) for some mysterious reason (at least sometimes).

              For 1: file not there

              Executed 2:

executed 3: still no "root actions" listed. After executing 2, the service menus actions listed under "configure Dolphin:Services" has expanded greatly, probably tripling in the number of services listed. However none of them are "root actions" per se.

Downloaded version 2.8.7 and installed as pr the directions. The service menu actions have not changed from the expanded list I got after executing item 2.

Maybe the problem is me - maybe I just don't understand what I am supposed to see in the list of service menu actions for "root action". I right click on a file and I see no "root actions".

I have attached the service menu actions window that I get. Is that the correct action list?

Have you put the servicemenu .desktop files in the correct directory?

kf5-dolphin (which you are using) uses ~/.local/share/kservices5/ServiceMenus/
So make sure you copy the .desktop files (10-rootactionsfolders.desktop and 11-rootactionsfiles.desktop) in that directory

                  Okay - that works.

BUT that leads me to another question:

                  HOW do I know/discover what s/w I am running??

I was under the impression that running Kubuntu I was using KDE and more specifically KDE4 under 15.x. Now it appears that I am NOT running KDE4 but rather kf5 (whatever that is).

Maybe it would be better if the installation instructions stated for Kubuntu 15.x or 14.x or ... instead of KDE3, or KDE4 or kf5.

Okay this gets even more confusing for me when I look at the root actions file I downloaded. When I extract everything from the compressed file I get two folders and 5 files. The folders are:

                  root_actions_2.8.7, and
                  root_actions_KDE3_2.7.3

Choosing between the two folders, the first is the way to go since the second is an old version of root actions. Under that folder I get 2 folders one of which is Dolphin_KDE4 and the otyher is krusader_KDE4. Now the names of the folders tells me that KDE4 installation instructions are what I want. Where and how did kf5 get into this mix??

kf5 is essentially just a part of what one could call "KDE5"...if the KDE People had not broken KDE Software into three "separate" branches (there are good technical reasons for this, but it can be confusing). The parts are:
KDE Frameworks 5 == Libraries and other low-level stuff (kf5)
KDE Plasma 5 == The desktop shell (plasma5)
KDE Applications == The applications (like dolphin, kate, konsole etc.)...some applications have already been ported to use kf5 libraries (including dolphin) and some still use KDE4 libraries. Kubuntu 15.10 has the kf5 version of dolphin.

Perhaps, but that would require me constantly keep track of hundreds of distributions and which iteration of KDE software they are using...the menu is not specifically for kubuntu

KDE4 and kf5 use the same files for installations (just different locations) so I've had no compelling reason to edit those (but I might do that since it's causing confusion).

I agree with Qqmike - Thanks for the explanations.

On a different note: Now that I have the root actions in the services menu. I used it to change the permissions on /usr/bin so that I could write a program file there.

I then tried to change the permissions back and nothing happened, the permissions did not change.

So I tried the old Alt-F2 and "kdesudo dolphin" - no Dolphin. Nothing happened.

So I tried the terminal window with: sudo dolphin

and got the following: sudo: /usr/bin/sudo must be owned by uid 0 and have the setuid bit set

So it appears that the root actions have changed something so that neither kdesudo or sudo work.

How do I get them back?

Never change permissions/ownerships on system directories unless you are really really really sure you know what you are doing (and even then it's usually a bad idea).
You can do it with sudo or with file manager as root (or with the root actions menu), but you can seriously hose a system that way, especially if you do it recursively (applying changes to all sub-folders and files, which I assume you did because of the sudo error that suggests the ownerships/permissions of /usr/bin/sudo have been changed).

The correct way to copy a file to a system directory (like /usr/bin) is to copy it with (kde)sudo (or with the menu)...or to start the file manager as root with kdesudo (or with the menu) and drag-and-drop the file as you are running the file manager with elevated privileges...not changing ownership/permissions of /usr/bin so you can copy files as your normal user.

Depending on what exactly you changed, the easiest/only real fix might be to reinstall...because while the majority of files in usr/bin have ownership "root root" and permissions 0755 "rwxr-xr-x", there are some files that have different ownerships/permissions for different reasons (including /usr/bin/sudo which has permissions 4755 "rwsr-xr-x"), and if you change the ownerships/permissions en masse there is no easy way to get back these different ownerships/permissions.

While you might be able to boot into recovery mode (to get a root shell) and change ownerships/permissions for /usr/bin and the files to "root root" and "0755" (and /usr/bin/sudo to "4755"), there would be other files with incorrect ownerships/permissions which will likely cause problems later on.

If you tell me exactly what you changed in /usr/bin with the menu...and if you wish to try the recovery mode route, I can give some guidance on the commands to change ownerships/permissions in the recovery shell, but this is likely going to be an incomplete fix (you could get sudo back, but other programs in /usr/bin might experience problems).

So my recommendation is reinstalling, unfortunately (but see EDIT below).

EDIT: If the only thing you did was to add write access to "others" in /usr/bin recursively, you should be able to undo the change (and dodge the bullet) by running "chmod -R o-w /usr/bin" in the root shell of the recovery mode.

Ok - I changed the ownership of the folder /usr/bin ONLY. Not the contents of the folder.

So what you are telling me is that root access broke the system and reinstalling is my only recourse of action.

No offense, but I will re-install. I will not use "Root Access Services" in Dolphin again. It is just not ready for prime time.

So you didn't click "yes" on the dialog that asks whether you wish to apply changes to sub-folders and files? Then the menu won't change the permissions of the contents, which makes the sudo error quite strange.

This depends on what exactly was changed, can you post the output of "ls -l /usr /usr/bin/sudo /usr/bin/mlocate"

None taken. Root actions can be dangerous, like using (kde)sudo or using dolphin as root, but in the 10 years of it's existence I haven't gotten a single report of it doing things that the user didn't instruct it to do...so I'd be extremely interested in (and grateful for) all the details you can provide of the exact steps you did with the menu, so I can examine this possibly very serious issue (I can't reproduce it on my end, if I answer "no" on the recursive dialog...the contents of directories are unaffected).
