AVG anti-virus installation botched prevents update of Kubuntu

I attempted to install the avg anti-virus software for Linux in order to remove a Windows 7 patch. It was installed in the process of updating to windows 10.

the problem is that the file avg2013flx
    is causing errors as follows:

    (synaptic:9449): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_child_watch_add_full: assertion 'pid > 0' failed
(Reading database ... 198763 files and directories currently installed.)
    Removing avg2013flx (2013.3115) ...
Failed to stop avgd.service: Unit avgd.service not loaded.
invoke-rc.d: initscript avgd, action "stop" failed.
dpkg: error processing package avg2013flx (--purge):
subprocess installed pre-removal script returned error exit status 5
    Errors were encountered while processing:
    avg2013flx
    E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
A package failed to install. Trying to recover:

I need to get rid of the avg installation. But how do I fix the error?

    Any ideas and suggestions, please?

Have you tried sudo apt-get remove --purge to completely remove all traces of it?
Not sure how installing a Linux AV will help to remove a windows patch though. Although some do see Microsoft as a virus....

Yes, I tried that command. It did not work.
this is a common problem with the AVG anti-virus application for Linux. I found many similar posts on the Net.
Followed the instructions in this one:
      http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2186126

It did not dolve the problem but got me to a stage where I could remove most of avg.
Only two directories in /opt left because they had data.

I removed the two directories manually.

Now avg is gone and my machine is updating as I type.

A stupid script that runs prior to uninstalling the files is failing
googling part of the error message brings this:

          PS:
AVG is one of the applications that can go into Windows and make changes there.
In the process of upgrading from windows 7 to Windows 10 a bad patch was installed. It is acting like a virus that prevent booting into Windows.
The repair process is said to use Linux to go into windows and make certain changes there.

I have a different laptop and it came with Windows 7. Though I do not use windows I thought it was a good idea to at least uprgade the version. Now I got a problem on my hands.

AVG is a very bad application. It is installing itself all over the place and it spies on you too.

Yes, thank you for the link.
            That would have done it.

            My way was somewhat similar.
And it was also successful. My laptop just upgraded successfully.
