    KDE Plasma 5.4.3 by Default?

    I was wondering if Kubuntu 15.10 will get the Plasma 5.4.3 update by default when it comes out this week or will it be relegated to ppa?

    They mention it here and was curious.

    It will be in the ppa. We can't just pump every new version into the repos, that's not how ubuntu's are managed and supported.

    These sort of updates have always come from our PPAs, though LTS releases do get some updates into the official repos, after they have been used and tested for a while.

    An update is not "relegated" by being in a ppa - the Kubuntu PPAs are run by the Kubuntu team.

      I guess I just never understood how KDE point releases that fix obvious bugs in the desktop environtment the distro is based on are not pushed to users by default.

        It's due to the restrictions placed on how things get into the official repos, we can't change that.

        However, this is one reason why they created the ppa system. Is it perfect? No, but it works, and is not difficult to enable.

          http://scarlettgatelyclark.com/2015/...y-for-testing/

          Please help test Plasma 5.4.3 in Wily.
          Once this has been tested and placed in Wily backports I will backport it to Vivid.
          As always do NOT test on a production machine.
          Thanks for your help!
          Code:
          sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/staging-plasma
          sudo apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade

            sudo apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade
            And do not forget to remove this ppa when you are done testing!! This ppa is for testing only, and is not a place for permanent updates.

            Code:
            sudo ppa-purge ppa:kubuntu-ppa/staging-plasma

              Assuming the testing goes ok will the ppa-purge set it back to all normal or leave funkyness on my system?

                  usually, it will revert packages back to the versions in your set of repos that you had before adding the ppa, but it is not guaranteed.

                  Anyway, the updates have now been released in the kubuntu-backports ppa, so they are out of testing.

                  In this particular case, anyone who added the -staging ppa can simply add the kubuntu-backports ppa, and then delete the entry for the staging-plasma, as the packages are identical, so ppa-purge is not needed. Just in this one case, though.

                    I added backports and noticed there were updates to a lot of KDE related things and clicked update but the results confused me.

                    Kinfo says KDE Plasma version is 5.4.3 but if I open Dolphin it says version 15.08.2? Wouldn't the applications update with plasma or are they now separate?

                      The KDE Frameworks, Applications, and Plasma are no longer released simultaneously.

                        Ah I see, I was confused because both plasma workspace and kde applications were publicly released on the same day.
