Kdenlive 15.08.2 Impossible to Edit Video

I was hoping the latest version of Kdenlive would improve its performance. However, it is impossible to do editing. I can copy a video to the Clip Window BUT when I drag it to the time-line, it freezes and nothing works. I have to complete video editing in the next few days and it is critical that this be done.

My options are:

(1) try and revert to the previous version - I have not been able to do this and I would like to know how this can be done.

(2) wait and hope the developers find what is wrong in the build process and fix it in the next day or two.

(3) remove Wily from my laptop and install Trusty Tahr as I know its version works.

Locking/Pinning/Holding packages

Holding a package basically means you're telling the package manager to keep the current version no matter what. This is useful if more recent version of a currently working program breaks after an update.

Thanks for all the information that you supplied. I hope the KDE forum report that I made gets someone to locate the problem in the creation of the deb file.

Unfortunately I regularly clean my package cache so the previous version is not present on my systems. As the deb files are not that large, it would be appreciated if they could be emailed to me and I could install the previous version. This would avoid building the previous version from source. I guess I am reluctant to take the latter approach.

In the meantime I am using my Wife's Trusty Tahr system which unfortunately is at least 6 times less powerful than my Laptop. So if I cannot get the previous version, I hope that the updated build of the latest version arrives soon.

I am pleased to report that this morning, OZ time, the latest build for Kdenlive came down the pipe and I have tested it and it is working very well. So full speed ahead with my video editing.

Also, many thanks to those who got onto fixing the build process that generated the deb file.

What riddell did is revert back to the previous one, but re-named the package version to allow the "old" to replace the 'new", for proper upgrades

I am pleased to report that Kdenlive 15.12.0 is now available from here. From my initial tests it is much improved over the 15.08.2 version which failed to work.

So for those who do Video Editing, this new version is certainly worth a try. It is also available on Xenial as it works on versions after and including Utopic and needs KDE5.

Great it worked out for you.

I found that 15.12.0 is still quite buggy, but might work a bit better than 15.08.2. For example try to time line move multiple clips with the motion speed effect at 10.000% I am not sure if this bug has been reported. I was not able to find it in the bug tracker though.

I used these instructions to get the ppa: Latest Kdenlive (https://kdenlive.org/download-ubuntu): sudo add-apt-repository ppa:sunab/kdenlive-release && sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install kdenlive

Firstly, I installed the latest version using Muon Package Manger > Settings > Configure Software Sources > Other Software > Add.... and copied in the ppa. After close, it then reloaded and provided the update for Kdenlive.

I also had a few problems with Kdenlive 15.08.2 crashing when I had complicated edits to do. I ended up doing a render and then doing the extra edits. At times I also removed files in the ~/kdenlive/thumbs folder to get it to behave. I figured that 15.12 couldn't be worse and in fact I found the pan and zoom much easier to use. I also tried dragging the time line through multiple clips and that worked without any problem.

"Once Bitten Quite Shy" is the approach I now take with Kdenlive. Even though it starts with a K that doesn't mean that there is a guarantee its build from a ppa will work. Currently I am using the packages from http://ppa.launchpad.net/sunab/kdenlive-release/ubuntu and the version I have is 15.12.

Previously, I had problems with a new release using the standard packages. This was only resolved when Jonathan Riddell replaced the new package by the old one. Since 15.12 works for me, I am not inclined to try another ppa with a newer version. From your reference, it seems that no one has been able to get 15.12.1 to work. So I would stay clear of it and continue to use 15.12.
