Smplayer player not showing video

Just noticed that if I try to play any video with smplayer, it start but play only the audio, the video window briefly open then collapse. Try to install, reinstall, from the depo, from the official site, still no video displayed at all. I swear this was working before. Could it be that updates destroyed it ?

VLC and mpv works ok.

I can't comment on why smplayer won't play your videos, but you do realize smplayer can use mpv as the backend.

Yes I know. Using mpv as the rendering engine in smplayer return "mplayer terminate badly : error code 1" on any video. If I play my videos with mpv player directly (or vlc), they play fine. I don't know what is wrong with mplayer.

Maybe the logs reveal the cause of the problems ?

You can save the mplayer log to a file: Preferences -> Advanced -> Logs -> Autosave mplayer log to file. That file is overwritten every time a video is played. You can find the filename and other information of the video in it.

Good idea ! This is the output ( i omit some gibberish in the middle) . Something to do with a bad option ? I don't know where this is set.

Ok I had a look in that forum thread (2014. Then I add directly the smplayer site ppa to the Ubuntu repository and got an update right away for the player. Sadly I still get another error but it seems to be different (see below). So I think I give up on it. I have different Linux distros running and never got that kind of error with the player. I have too many problems with Kubuntu so I revert back to Mint Kde 4 on my main comp.

Clear out your smplayer settings and start afresh. Seems like there's a config file with something in it that it can't cope with.
