Saving and naming files in Kubuntu 15.04

I noticed the following behvior when I save and name files in Kubuntu 15.04. I can't find the settings to change this.

I use the following work flow when I save files...

I click save and navigate to the directory where I want to save the file
I click to highlight a similar file and the name fills in

I place my cursor in the name field and backspace out the date to update with the current date and time

I start typing to enter the new date and everything after my cursor gets highlighted.

If I type one more character the highlighted section is replaced with the character I just typed.

I don't see the behavior in earlier releases of Kubuntu or other Linux OS's.
Is there a setting to change this behavior?

I tried this with Okular and LibreOffice writer and I don't get the behavior. Seems to be limited to kate.

It's just a bash script to start conky. It works in Xfce and other environments. I'll try an older Kubuntu release and see if I have the same issue.

With KDE I have been starting with the last saved session. Conky is running when I shut down so it starts when I log back in. I tried putting the start script in place and starting with an empty session, but that didn't work.

Should I use another text editor instead of Kate?

Sorry oshun. I was responding from my phone and confused this with the other thread I started.

For the record...I see the same behavior, described in this thread, with KWrite.

I didn't get the behavior when saving .jpg files. It looks like it is limited to certain programs. So far I have only noticed it in Kate and KWrite.
