A few questions on Plasma

Having trouble with plasma under 15.04.

1. I was able to add Jedit to the panel. That made me bold and added "clipper" and then noticed that clipper is already in the system tray. Now I cannot remove the clipper icon I added to the panel. I read the plasma manual - no help. It is both wrong and inaccurate. Right clicking, left clicking or middle clicking does not offer any option to remove the icon. I find it hard to believe that anybody could design and build a system that doesn't allow the user to "undo" actions.

2. Tried doing the same thing to add Chromium to the panel. It wouldn't "stick". Is there a consistent and reliable way to add programs to the panel

3. I still cannot get time to display in a 24 hour format with hours, minutes and seconds. The only options seem to be some kind of national system. Does anybody know the national system for displaying time in 24 hour format with hrs, min and secs It is still totally foreign to me how this system is designed.. I cannot even do something as simple as setting the time format. Weird.

The file ~/.config/plasma-org.kde.plasma.desktop-appletsrc contains the configuration for the system tray along with other desktop elements like the panel. Seems like you probably have two entries for Klipper. What's the output of

grep -C 5 clipboard .config/plasma-org.kde.plasma.desktop-appletsrc

For any running program, right-click the icon in the task manager and choose Show a launcher when not running

There are 2 clipboards in there. I would delete one using Jedit, but I don't klnow what else that may or may not muck up.

Would it be safe to just use Jedit (or Kate) to delete the second reference to clipper? I assume the first is the one in the system tray which I want to leave in place.

Thanks for your help. Is there another/better way to delete icon other thank editing the configuration file? Seems like a rather kludgy way to accomplish the task. Seems like the developers never envisioned anybody eliminating icons on the panel rather thasn just adding.

Well, hand-editing configuration files certainly isn't the intention. But there's a lot that's new in Plasma 5, and perhaps you've stumbled across a bug. It might be worth filing a report against Plasma at http://bugs.kde.org.

Anyway... the second one is the correct one, it's contained within the system tray container. The first one is the entry to remove. It's best if you log out of KDE to do this. Then press Ctrl+Alt+F2 to switch to a TTY console. Log in with your normal user ID and password. Then run:

nano ~/.config/plasma-org.kde.plasma.desktop-appletsrc

Cursor to and delete these three lines. Position the cursor on the first line and press Ctrl+K to delete it. Then delete the next two:

plugin=org.kde.plasma.clipboard

Press Ctrl+X to exit the editor. Nano will first prompt you to save; press Y. Then just press Enter when it asks what file to write -- the name will already be in the prompt line.

Now enter Exit to leave the TTY. Press Ctrl+Alt+F7 to return to the graphical login manager. Go ahead and log in. The extra Klipper should be gone.

Tried to use the button to "Show a Launcher When Not Running". Nice idea if it worked. Unfortunately NOT. Tried with both chromium and firefox - simply did not work for either. It seems that Plasma has decided that the only way for to launch a program is through the Kicker drop down menus. Makes it harder to do so, but on the bright side it hasn't decided that I cannot run any program altogether.

As for filing a bug report - I've been through that more time than I can count - NEVER any results and the filing process is long and detailed. After the nth time of following their process, I just decided that they really, really do NOT want me to file a bug report
so I've pretty much decided to go with their desire on the subject. I mean if they wanted a bug report, do not squander the opportunity and take up large amounts of the users time on information that they very likely do not know. The last time I had a crash and the bug report dialog popped up It noted that a special package containing debugging information or some such was needed and that I should install the package - did so and tried again and again and again and again. It seems that the special package that was needed was unknown to the dialog and the dialog just hung in an infinite loop asking for the same thing over and over and over and ...... I that point I was ready to file a bug report on the process for filing a bug report, but decided that was an infinitely recursive process and just stopped using the bug report dialogs.

Have to correct my reply above about the "Show a Launcher When Not Running" action. It does indeed work. The problem I had is that the icon that was posted on the panel was really, really really, really tiny. So tiny I couldn't distinguish the features only the color of the icon. Also, I am used to launcher icons on the panel on the right side next to the system tray. Here though the icons were placed on the left side next to the Kicker icon. Once I noticed that smudge there, I investigated and discovered what they were. Since I'm used to their beong on the right side, I tried moving them there. That worked and also increased the size to a "normal" size. The funny thing is that once moved and returned to a "normal" size, the "Show a Launcher When Not Running" button is unmarked and they stay visible even when the program is running. This brings them back to their historical behaviour under previous panels in previous KDE versions.
