No, there is no bluetooth command, but if you type blue (not bluetooth as I had incorrectly mentioned) in krunner or kmenu, you do get Bluedevil as an option. Sorry 'bout that!

This gets you the tray icon, from where you can configure and control bluetooth. It just doesn't start automatically. I've added it as an autostart item an system settings, which should work.

      Works!

      Code:
      steve@x250:~$ [B]ps -ef | grep blue[/B]
      root 684 1 0 May25 ? 00:00:00 /usr/sbin/bluetoothd -n
      steve 14768 1 1 16:10 ? 00:00:00 /usr/bin/bluedevil-monolithic [I][COLOR="#FF0000"]<-- this is what got started[/COLOR][/I]
And the icon is in my system tray.

So I rebooted this morning to test, and again - no bluetooth. I started "bluetooth" using sudo /etc/init.d/bluetooth start which launched the daemon, but no tray icon. Then I did kcmshell4 bluedevildevices and got the bluedevil window with the "Bluetooth is not completely enabled" message and the "Fix It" button. I don't know what that button does, but clicking it puts the bluedevil icon in the systray.

Still no "blue" command on my system.

If you open KRunner and type just "blue", do you eventually see "Bluetooth" appear in the list? That's what worked for me. It's a launcher in Applications -> Internet. It points to /usr/bin/bluedevil-monolithic.

No, nothing happened. I also tried it in a terminal which results in the above "not found" message. I did just find "Bluetooth" in my App>Internet menu and it wasn't there before. Must have inserted when I re-installed bluedevil. I'm working at the moment, so I'll reboot later and try using the menu item and report the results.

I still don't get why bluetooth isn't starting at boot time - it appears all the scripts are in place and correct - but I can deal with it as is for now. I might just write a work-around script to launch at start.

I'm sure once everything is ported to kcmshell5 most of these little niggling problems will go away.

I'd expect a command line attempt to result in the behavior you observed. But typing into KRunner triggers a Baloo search; you should have seen anything on your system that Baloo would have indexed containing "blue" in a filename or contents.

                Yes:
                Code:
                steve@x250:~$ [B]dpkg -S bluedevil-monolithic[/B]
                bluedevil: /usr/share/applications/kde4/bluedevil-monolithic.desktop

What scripts are you examining? And the workaround is much easier: just create an autstart entry for /usr/bin/bluedevil-monolithic:

There already is a Plasma 5 Bluetooth applet; it was included with version 5.3. But for some reason, it isn't packaged in Kubuntu backports -- probably because we don't have BluezQt yet.

I was referring to the init scripts being in place.

Anyway, @here just starting BlueDevil from the Kmenu or Krunner doesn't work so I suspect putting it in autostart won't either. However, doing "kcmshell4 bluedevildevices" brings up the device window. Once I click on "Fix It" because apparently something isn't set up correctly. the bluetooth icon appears in the panel.

What happens if you reboot and then run /usr/bin/bluedevil-monolithic from a console window? I'm wondering what, if any, useful errors might appear.

After a reboot, the only errors were inconsequential and the bluetooth icon appears.

                      Code:
                      stuart@office:~$ /usr/bin/bluedevil-monolithic

Then putting that exact command (Add program button) in an autostart should work for you now, I suspect.

                          Indeed it does.

Now if I can just get Synergy and HP-Systray to "find" the systray at startup, i'll be a happy camper!
