KWallet Manager Broken and no 'Add to Panel'

There are two things I do with a new distribution; Kill KWallet so that I don't have to give my password to start WiFi on every login and add my most important admin programs like KTerminal and Kate to the panel.

KWallet manager is broken: the menus don't do anything and it takes an age to close down.

'Add to Panel' is missing from the Application Launcher in the context menu (only 'Add to Favorites' remains).

This was after a distribution upgrade from 14.10. Is a new install from DVD more effective?

How do you kill KWallet? I want that, I want that, I want that . Either that or not have to issue the password manually.

I don't think there is a difference between dist-upgrade and a fresh install, I have attempted both and have seen no changes.

One way to get around kwallet asking for passwords for wifi is to edit the settings for your connection and set it to allow all users' access.

Kubuntu is *supposed* to have kwallet tied to the user's login (since Trusty), but I think that this is only on new installs.

The "add to panel" is missing from menu, but is still there in the classic menu. You should be able to drag and drop items onto your panel, however.

I remember my 14.10 install having KWallet tied to login but the fresh 15.04 install didn't have it. This was from beta2 ISO.

Another option to tame the wallet is to set a blank password on it. The wallet file itself is still encrypted on the drive, which is somewhat better than storing secrets in plaintext files.

Having a wallet is fine by me as long as it is completely integrated. MacOS X has these horrors with the keychain or keyring and changing your administrator password makes you lose access to it.

Just in case folk are having problems, even in late August, the Kwallet editor is still broken. It eventually freezes the entire desktop requiring the PC power button to be held in to halt the system.

This means that Kwallet cannot be 'reset' or existing wallet password be removed. Some folk reckon that putting in a blank password works, but this has never worked for me since Kwallet was introduced.

As you say, setting the network connection to 'all users' stops Kwallet asking for the password to connect WiFi.

Grit your teeth and put the Kwallet password in to set up the network connection. Left-click on the System Tray WiFi icon and the potential WiFi connections will appear. Towards the top there is a line of icons. To the right is the Network Connections icon. Click it and select the WiFi connection you are using. Choose 'Edit' and then choose the General configuration tab. Select the box 'All users may connect to this network'.

For 'Add to Panel', right click on the KLauncher button and choose the 'Alternatives' menu item. Select the 'cascading menus' option and click Switch. Now the 'Add to Panel' option is available. After adding your panel icons use the same procedure to switch back to the icon menu.

You can 'drag and drop' from the icon menu, but it is fussy. Drag the icon just to the left of the KLauncher button: there should be a lot of flickering of icons to left and right. Release the mouse button and the icon should appear to the left or right of the KLauncher. Something similar can be achieved near the System Tray. Once you have all the icons you want on the panel, use the 'Edit Panel' icon on the panel (three horizontal lines, one above the other) and put them in your preferred order and positions.
