When Will New Intel Proprietary Display Driver Be Released?

    Hi,

Running Kubuntu 15.04 64Bit fully updated
on a slow thin client with integrated Intel video.

When will the official new Intel proprietary display driver
be released for new Kubuntu 15.04 ?

    I look here

    Thanks!

    Jesse

I didn't think Intel even had proprietary graphics drivers for Linux.

Just a heads up: I've seen you ask about this before, but I don't think you're going to get very good answers... not because people don't want to be helpful, but because the best thing about intel graphics is that you don't need proprietary drivers in the first place!

Out of interest, is there any particular reason why you are running the proprietary drivers?

You've got the latest Intel drivers in 15.04.

Graphics: Card: Intel Atom Processor Z36xxx/Z37xxx Series Graphics & Display bus-ID: 00:02.0
GLX Renderer: Mesa DRI Intel Bay Trail GLX Version: 3.0 Mesa 10.5.2 Direct Rendering: Yes

Problem is Kernel 3.19 which has a separate Intel DRM branch. Kernel 4.0 includes the Intel DRM stuff in the main branch. So while it may not be a big deal to the morons at Canonical, my Atom CPU was running turbo boost full time on two cores. That's actually an improvement over 3.16 in latest OpenSuSE which overclocked it and ran it at 3.2 GHz (max is 2.66)!!! This is why people hate Linux. Almost toasted my lappy because of this stoopid shiat.

CPU: Quad core Intel Pentium N3540 (-MCP-) cache: 1024 KB
      flags: (lm nx sse sse2 sse3 sse4_1 sse4_2 ssse3 vmx) bmips: 17305
      clock speeds:min/max: 499/2665 MHz 1: 499 MHz 2: 499 MHz 3: 499 MHz 4: 499 MHz

Maybe by the time the hardware is obsolete K/Ubuntu will support it out-of-the-box. Hmpf!

      System: Host: AF17 Kernel: 4.0.0-040000-generic x86_64 (64 bit gcc: 4.6.3) Desktop: KDE 5 dm: N/A
      Distro: Ubuntu 15.04 vivid

"Kernel PPA mainline" had the one I needed so everything is OK for now. I'd post a link but cant with 0 posts so google it yourself.

I was wrong, the stoopid shiat continues with 4.0. I needed the kernel from:
          http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa...5-04-24-vivid/

And to be fair, Intel needs to biatch slapped a bit. Half of my problem is because they marketed this lappy as a Quad core Pentium with Intel HD graphics. Since I was upgrading from a dual core Pentium with Intel HD graphics, I though it would be a no-brainer. Unfortunately they sold me an ATOM CPU with ATOM GRAPHICS. I put the Pentium Inside sticker on my toilet.

You need the Intel drivers if you want to run Battle.net or Blizzard games in Wine.

Those are probably Windows DirectX drivers. The original post had a link to get the latest Linux drivers for 14.10 but you don't need them in 15.04. Personally, I went back to 14.04 because KDE 5 just isn't ready. None of the old themes work but Kubuntu will let you waste your time downloading and installing them. I've got several hundred megs of junk I can't use now.

Vivid has the latest Intel graphics drivers available, so you are up-to-date already. There are no proprietary Intel graphics drivers on Linux, as they fully support and provide free/open drivers.

                lark@lark-Latitude-D830:~$ apt-cache policy xserver-xorg-video-intel
                xserver-xorg-video-intel:
                Installed: 2:2.99.917-1~exp1ubuntu2build1
                Candidate: 2:2.99.917-1~exp1ubuntu2build1
                Version table:
                *** 2:2.99.917-1~exp1ubuntu2build1 0
                500 http://mirrors.advancedhosters.com/ubuntu/ vivid/main amd64 Packages
                100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
                https://01.org/linuxgraphics/downloads
Do not confuse the installer version with the actual driver version. 2.99.917 is the latest.

While there will be newer versions of the driver down the road, you likely are not going to see a big difference in performance, but may find bug fixes.
You can get those via the xorg-edgers ppa.

The real question we should ask is what graphics problems are you experiencing?

Thank you! I was getting the feeling I was just screaming into the wind there for a while!

Those were not DirectX drivers. I bet there was an issue in interacting with DirectX, but the driver issue itself was not related to DirectX drivers, seeing as they are not installed by that Intel driver. I'm talking about that "Intel Graphics Stack" that the OP linked to.

The OP never mentioned DirectX or Wine, but thin clients.

The download page linked to by both me and Jez do provide the source code as well as a generic installer, but as I mentioned the driver it provides is the same as the one Ubuntu is shipping in Vivid. And actually, the mesa version included is actually older than what Ubuntu ships.

I don't care. I said there was a reason for using those drivers and it was dismissed.

And you don't know if that is everything to it, right? If that was so Ubuntu could package it as well.? At least that is what the OP was hinting at. That there was something more to it, hence calling it "proprietry." I am merely saying that , IF there is a reason , to use it in the first place, there might be a reason to keep using it, and, IF there is a reason to use it in the first place AND there is nothing special about the Ubuntu shipped drivers THEN the OP might have a reason to install it. But I don't know, and you don't know, what the OP was after. I am merely saying that in 14.10 at least, there is a reason to use them and it is the Battle.Net client.

AND if this is so, there might be a good reason to keep using it and it should not so readily be dismisssed as if "Intel doesn't ship proprietry drivers". You're saying you know everything about this driver, but I'm not sure, because you said MY driver was an DirectX driver and it was not so. I linked to the same driver (or wanted to link to the same driver) as the OP was linking to, hence the https://01.org/linuxgraphics/downloa...er-linux-1.0.8 that I didn't post. There is a reason for this project, right? You don't have to dismiss it that readily. That's all I'm saying. Not be so arrogant about it as if you know it all.

How in the heck do you get arrogance out of that? Wow.

I am just pointing out a few things to consider for those who come across this thread and decide they might want to try the software from this download page, specifically Vivid users, as this is a 15.04 specific question in a 15.04 specific subforum.

You think that there is not arrogance in these mailing lists and forums?

So you're writing it for users who are NOT reading this thread? No wonder it comes out wrong. People wouldn't download those Intel drivers for 15.04 since the download page explicitly states what version it is for (ie. 14.10). Hence the question to this thread "When will the new ... driver be released." That means no one in his right mind would take the download link as an answer to that question since it was the OP who provided the download link AND the question. You don't have to answer for people who are not here (talk to the real ones instead).. It's not much useful this.
