Removed the nvidia drivers and the system is working!
By now, I am using intel drivers. Tomorrow, I will try to use the nvidia 346.

I installed the nvidia 346 driver and activated it using the GUI (which was, strangely, identifying it as 340). But then the problem was back...
My next try is use the 349 driver.

          I fixed this by:
          sudo apt-get install lightdm
          sudo dpkg-reconfigure lightdm

          and selected lightdm.

          UPDATE:
I have also installed sddm display manager and works perfect for me:
          sudo apt-get install sddm
          sudo dpkg-reconfigure sddm

I have a similar problem. I used the auto update. I told it ok, I didn't have anything open. When it finished and rebooted all I get is a flashing dash line. I have windows 8 on a separate hard drive, but I run kubuntu. To boot I had to hit F10 during start up and select Ubuntu in the boot menu. Now Ubuntu is missing in the bios menu. I can force it to boot to the hard drive with kubunut on it / but all i get is the flashing dash line. I need instructions to fix this. I have been using kubuntu and if I have to do complete re-install Im going to lose everything!!!

Sounds to me like a boot loader problem. Try installing/reinstalling grub boot loader. Some useful information:

Why would it be related to the boot loader?

I tried the nvidia 349 and it did not work too. So, i am back to nouveau driver.

I'm guessing it's probably too late now for clem, but for anyone else who stumbles across this; If you have bootable media (ie. a boot cd or boot usb) then chances are you can get to your data if there is not a hardware error. Boot the install disc/usb and select try ubuntu, then go into file manager and you should be able to access your drive.
