I have a similar problem. I used the auto update. I told it ok, I didn't have anything open. When it finished and rebooted all I get is a flashing dash line. I have windows 8 on a separate hard drive, but I run kubuntu. To boot I had to hit F10 during start up and select Ubuntu in the boot menu. Now Ubuntu is missing in the bios menu. I can force it to boot to the hard drive with kubunut on it / but all i get is the flashing dash line. I need instructions to fix this. I have been using kubuntu and if I have to do complete re-install Im going to lose everything!!!

Sounds to me like a boot loader problem. Try installing/reinstalling grub boot loader. Some useful information:

I'm guessing it's probably too late now for clem, but for anyone else who stumbles across this; If you have bootable media (ie. a boot cd or boot usb) then chances are you can get to your data if there is not a hardware error. Boot the install disc/usb and select try ubuntu, then go into file manager and you should be able to access your drive.Last edited by Jazzcat; May 08, 2015, 09:05 AM.
