If I right click on a folder and click 'add to places' it does nothing. I have had several plasma crashes also but it tells me the crash info is useless, so cant provide any info on those.

The OP may be seeing krunner crashes instead of Plasma crashes, or krunner crashes followed by Plasma crashes.
The krunner crashes are a bit frustrating because the Install Debug Symbols button will just tell you no packages can be found (or something similar).

Thanks guys for your suggestions. will drag'n'drop my folders to add them.
As for the crashes ronw was spot on I clicked Install Debug Symbols, it told me the packages could not be found and I didnt really have time at that point to look into it further. But I will later on today as I have seen a few crashes now and it would be good to be able to report them.

Well I tried drag'n'drop and that did work except if you close Dolphin and reopen they are gone again. I have tried several times. One other question, previously I was using LinuxMint 17.1 and in that version in Dolphin you could right click on a file/folder and take owership of it. Is that feature in the new version its very handy as a quick permissons fix on a file.

Workaround
Well I tried drag'n'drop and that did work except if you close Dolphin and reopen they are gone again. I have tried several times...
As told in the Bug 345174 - there is miscmatch between the old KDE4 and the new KF5:
~/.kde/share/apps/kfileplaces/bookmarks.xml vs. ~/.local/share/user-places.xbel
Kate > File > Open and edit the 'Places'.
The fix could be the : https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=345174#c17
Context menu
...previously I was using LinuxMint 17.1 and in that version in Dolphin you could right click on a file/folder and take owership of it...
The user could add service menus from the Dolphin > Settings > Configure Dolphin > Services > Download New Services.
I have found the 'kubicle's Root Actions Servicemenu ( http://kde-apps.org/content/show.php...?content=48411 ) very handy.
