Ksysguard Freezes Desktop

Today I found that when I start Ksysguard, I could not start or control anything else on the desktop. For example, I could not launch Dolphin. Ksysguard keeps working as it should but nothing else works. The clock continues and when I exit Ksysguard, I get a Sorry Plasma message with KDEInit could not launch '/usr/bin/ksysguard'.

Has anyone else encountered this problem or is there a solution that I am unaware off?

If I start it via the Kmenu, I see the problem you are seeing.

If I start it via krunner, the desktop works normally, except that the krunner window is stuck on the screen.

I see the KDEInit message after closing it, either way.

It also logs "cannot open config file '/etc/ksysguarddrc'" even though that file is there.

Thanks for your reply and I am glad that I am not the only person on the Planet with this problem.

I found that when I used krunner, it gave me two options. the second it to select run ksysguard and this made ksysguard work as it should. I decided to try editing the Applications menu and the only option for ksysguard that I found would work, was to select the option to run in terminal mode. This give the "Sorry Plasma" error message KDEInit could not launch konsole. When I click OK to this message, I get my desktop usage back to normal. The only problem with this approach is that there is konsole running and it has the message

I am sure that this is a simple problem for the developers to fix. I would hope that it is done soon as I found this problem during a Skype session and fortunately that did not fail as all I was trying to do was check the network and processor activity with a new webcam that I had bought.

I found it interesting that in all the examples using krunner, the full name ie ksysguard was not entered. When I did this, I got the following output.ksysguard.jpg By selecting the lower option, ksysguard runs without an error and the krunner box goes away with a normal operating desktop.

This behaviour makes me believe that this problem should be easy to fix.

The ksysguard is grabbing/freezing the plasma. When the System Monitor is launched the panel autohide/show is not working. And on exit the error message is shown.

Looking what is available - picking the Kubuntu CI Stable. It has ksysguard 2015-02-27 (more fresh).

Adding the repository.

Updating the apt database.

Upgrading the ksysguard (simulation first).

Kubuntu 15.04 - will be a beta release of the KF5 + plasma 5 + all the other bits.
Kubuntu 15.10 - will be a RC release of the KF5 + plasma 5 + all the other bits.
Kubuntu 16.04 - will be a quality release of the KF5 + plasma 5 + all the other bits (hopefully ).

Thanks for showing how the kubuntu ci repository solves the problem. As I am a little more daring, I added the repository ppa:kubuntu-ci/stable and found that there were over 200 packages to update. So I decided to accept all and my system is still working including ksysguard.

My system no longer boots from the default option. It stops with a message "starting version 219" on a blank screen. I can now only boot my system from choosing the option upstart from the advanced options. This used to be systemd, which is no longer listed.

You may want (or may not) to use the ppa-purge:

Switch for a single boot

In grub, select "Advanced options for Ubuntu", where you will find an "Ubuntu, with Linux ... (systemd)" entry. This will boot with init=/lib/systemd/systemd.

If you have systemd-sysv installed and thus boot with that by default, there will be an "Ubuntu, with Linux ... (upstart)" entry, which will boot with init=/sbin/upstart.

There is another workaround so you don't need to upgrade ksysguard. Edit /usr/share/applications/org.kde.ksysguard.desktop and comment out this line (add a # before it):

I ended up doing a re-install using the 10th March build as I found that using ppa:kubuntu-ci/stable was not the way to go. I found that muon from this ppa did not have the option to Configure Software Sources so I removed this ppa using Muon Discover. When I tried to remove muon and other packages after doing this, I had package conflicts with those that had been installed from the kubuntu-ci repository.

I had another reason for doing the install. That was to measure the time for installation and report the times to my Son who uses Windows. The very approximate times for installation on a USB 3.0 Flash Drive were 15 minutes to reboot and 20 minutes to enter and install about 200 packages to give me full multimedia and communications capabilities.
