Said bye-bye to Youtube Popups, finally

I stumbled across a cool little GNU free program named Minitube. It's a standalone app that plays Youtube videos and lets you avoid the annoying popups that Youtube keeps sneaking in over the wishes of popup blockers. So far so good, I'm happy with this little app. I've also used a FireFox add-in, Download Helper, that has let me download Youtube videos in various video formats such as MP4, AVI, etc., so that I can watch the vids with no popups or burn them to DVD if I want to.

Just a heads up on programs I like. Feel free to drop a heads up on cool utilities or other apps that you've found useful.
Kubuntu 22.04 (desktop & laptop), Windows 7 &2K (via VirtualBox on desktop PC)

          I use YouTube daily, I never see ads or get popups & hide elements that are annoying. I use Firefox with these addons;
          Adblock Plus 2.6.7
(Add EasyList subscription if not already done by default, turn off "allow some non-intrusive advertising" in preferences)
          Adblock Plus Pop-up Addon 0.9.2
Element Hiding Helper for Adblock Plus 1.3.1 (this allows you to hide things like the "recommended Channels" sidebar)

I also have Stylish 2.0.1 that allows me to use the "Black Youtube by Panos" theme to make YouTube all black. So much easier to watch that way. There are others but his is the most stable & updated, I've tried others.

I rarely have problems, and YouTube works better. Adblock allows you to unblock specific pages or sites if you choose to support a site by allowing their ads.

          Oops... forgot to add,
I also use DownloadHelper, but for YouTube I really like "YouTube Video and Audio Downloader 0.4.3". It only works on YouTube but really makes things faster. Up to 720p rez. 1080p (and higher) is also available with ffmpeg enabled but I can't seem to get it to work for me.

Me too. Good content is moving to other funding models, such as sponsorship or voluntary paid subscription.

Me too. Panos got a little behind site changes a couple of years ago, but has been right on to it since.

I'll check that out next time I want a download. youtube-dl is in the repositories, but out of date there; however to download the latest version was simple, it's a python script.

Repositories? I usually just use the Firefox addon site. Am I missing something or is youtube-dl something different?

I love Youtube, I get to watch all kinds of tv in other languages. And it can be a really great educational source as well. I stopped watching US tv a few years ago.

youtube-dl will allow you to download a video from youtube at the command line.

Play a video in your browser, right-click-copy the URL, open konsole, type youtube-dl and then SHIFT-INSERT to paste the URL, enter, watch the video download.

It will have a nonsensical name, but it usually works. The folks at youtube change things around a bit, so if it fails, update it.

Just a side note, I have both Firefox from the repository (35.0.1) and Firefox Aurora, the beta release (37.0). Download Helper fails to download under Aurora but runs fine on the current version from the repository. Hope it gets fixed soon.

Thanks, I thought I missed something. So can this download in 1080p? That seems to be the magical question since YouTube went to Dash for 1080p and higher. Anything over 720p needs to be downloaded in video & audio streams and then combined. I believe all of the Yandex & VK videos do that as well. Not sure about Vimeo or DailyMotion, but Dash seems to be the trend.

AFAIK, youtube-dl gets 720 streams. You'll have to look up how to get 1080p on your own...

I use 4kdownload on both windows and kubuntu. You can only download 10 in a playlist unless you pay $10 for registration. I've used it download playlists. then share them and watch on the tv. Much better at 60 inches than 27

I've never had DownloadHelper do anything higher than 720p in the last 1.5 years. When YouTube went to dash for full HD, 720p was the standard utility download for most addons. Dash is lots of little files. VK.com & CBS.com are two examples. Stitching them together is a pain.
