Can't compile guest additions in Plasma5

The headers for the current running kernel were not found. If the module compilation fails then this could be the reason.

Building the main Guest Additions module ...done.
Building the shared folder support module ...fail!
(Look at /var/log/vboxadd-install.log to find out what went wrong)
Installing the Window System drivers ...fails!
(Could not find the X.Org or XFree86 Window System).
Currently the most recent version of VirtualBox in Kubuntu 14.10/Plasma5's repository is 4.3.10.
The 4.3.18 version appears to solve the problem. I can either dl from VirtualBox's website or wait until it is updated in the repository. Until then I can't expand the display nor use shared folders.

Are you sure? I have VB installed from the stock Ubuntu repos, and it is 4.3.18
    Code:
    lark@lark-Latitude-D630:~$ apt-cache policy virtualbox
    virtualbox:
    Installed: 4.3.18-dfsg-1
    Candidate: 4.3.18-dfsg-1
    Version table:
    *** 4.3.18-dfsg-1 0

    100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Yup. Here is what is in my repository, which was set up when I installed Trusty.

      which is the 4.3.10-dfsg-1 version.
      Here is my policy:
      Code:
      $ apt-cache policy virtualbox
      virtualbox:
        Installed: 4.3.10-dfsg-1
        Candidate: 4.3.10-dfsg-1

As you can see, I am running Trusty and installing Utopic as a guest OS. I think I will uninstall 4.3.10 and replace it with 4.3.18 from Oracle's website. What do you think?

Using the Oracle repo in my Trusty host let Guest Additions install and work in a Utopic guest.

The Ubuntu repo seems to have caught up in Utopic, but history says it will start lagging again and newer kernels will break. The VB folks have often complained that Ubuntu does odd things with kernels.

Excellent! That was the node to practical experience that I wanted to hear. Now it's off to get the 4.3.18 version

OK, the good news: VirtualBox 4.3.18 allows me to run VirtualBoxAdditions.run and generate all the necessary files to allow the desktop to be resized.

The bad news: the guest additions did not fix the other problem I thought it would fix: the invisible panel and applications. Click the mouse on the panel and it disappears. You can click on the desktop where the hotspots would be located if the panel were showing and pull up the application launcher. Or, you can use Alt+F2 and run Konsole or other apps from the command line. However, NONE of the apps windows show on the desktop. And, the desktop is very unstable, at least under VirtualBox. If you grab the edge of the desktop and drag it the application's windows show up while you are dragging, but then the plasma5 desktop crashes.

Big oops here, sorry! I think I confused myself between here and another thread, thinking you were on 14.10

No problem. I was confused myself, but that is getting to be my new norm.

BTW, I decided to wait until Utopic with plasma5 can be loaded as a guest OS and run normally. At least I have the latest VBox.
