That's interesting, Snowhog. Why would an Upstart file for SDDM contain entries relating to the saned scanner daemon?

I have the same question. When I boot from the iso, the boot splashes the kubuntu logo then halts and displays:

      /etc/rc2.d/SO2sddm : 4: .: Can't open /lib/init-d-script saned disabled: edit /etc/default/saned

Can't find the file on the iso to edit it anyway. On the harddrive, which boots just fine, it's disabled and is not part of the code in SO2sddm. Doesn't matter, except I hate puzzles I can't solve. I got plasma5 installed by doing this:

      1. Install 14.10
      2. sudo apt update
      3. sudo apt full-upgrade
      4. log out and back in (may have to reboot, especially if there were kernel updates)
      5. Poke around and make sure things work
      6. add the plasma-next ppa
      7. sudo apt update
      8. sudo apt full-upgrade
      9. sudo apt install kubuntu-plasma5-desktop:
      10. sudo apt remove plasma-desktop (to remove the kde4 package that did not update)
      11. sudo apt install plasma-desktop (will install some extra stuff)
      12. log out or reboot (likely will have to do so from the command line)

Which are different from the instructions given on the kubuntu download page. Their instructions fail. That's why the Forum is so important. I can't troubleshoot and fix everything, and sometimes help is needed from people who have solved similar problems.

Had to use CUPS to install my printer, and it took me a bit to get full size icons on the panel. Rearranging the launcher icons makes them larger and then you can delete the launchers associated with them. Odd, rather prefer the kde4 pin to panel method. The drag and drop from the application launcher to the desktop as links took a bit to figure out. The application launcher also does not update to display apps installed from Muon. I had to go to the applications folder to drag and drop links. I also miss the yahoo weather widget which isn't available for plasma 5 yet (?) And no screensaver except the default locker. NO game stoppers, and I'm sure those items will all be addressed in 15 (?).

Wow, this is perplexing. Why would a login manager have any reference at all to a daemon for scanners?

Really. I'm back to 14.10. I had fun for a day playing with my konsole installed version of plasma 5, but then stuff started to go buggy real quick. The Application Launcher finally updated with the added applications after several hours, weird. Then icons on the desktop and in the panel started to change to the gear icon and some of them no longer worked anymore. Some would open once and then stop working. I like playing, but I also need to be productive. It was fun while it lasted, but I have to get some work done now. It sure was purty though while it worked.

I think that the saned line visible on the screen is simply the last thing that was happening before the crash/freeze/lockup and is irrelevant - the script DOES specify that saned is disabled, and that is what is output on the screen, is all. Searching for "saned disabled" brings up tons of hits going back a number of years, and seems to point to video driver/ plymouth crashing, so sddm itself is not the cause, nor is saned.

I just fired up the Plasma5 iso, and booted to it - the plymouth splash screen does go away, and the saned disabled line does appear, but after a few moments, it does go to the login screen.

I'm downloading a vivid image to see if the same happens with it. 14.10 with kde4 boots just fine.

Check the date on the iso, there have not been any new kubuntu iso builds on cdimage.ubuntu.com since November 6, and that is pre-plasma5
