How do I open the 'start' menu without a mouse?

I upgraded to 14.10 but it messed up freezing the mouse in place however I was still able to log in using tab on the keyboard

I'm hoping upgrading will fix this problem but I don't know how to open the 'start' menu with the keyboard and I figure I could just tab around to do the rest with muon upgrader

OK, maybe I'm being a bit nit-picky or pedantic but pressing Alt+F2 brings up something called "Krunner" I think (not Yakuake). On my system I have Yakuake installed too but I use the default keystroke to bring it up: F12.
