    Not many updates to KDE5?

    Hi Guys,

I'm running KDE5 at the moment, have been for about a month now, but, I don't seem to be seeing any kde related updates happening anywhere. Is that right? I would have though, given its state of development (or lack there of) that there would have been updates being released fairly regularly for it.

I have http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-ppa/next/ubuntu utopic main in my sources (which I think is where kde5 came from) and kde backports enabled, should I have any others for kde?

    Thanks.

    Peter.

The Latest Updates section shows the last build was sddm 3 weeks ago.

    https://launchpad.net/~kubuntu-ppa/+archive/ubuntu/next

That doesn't tell you what is going on, but tells you why you haven't seen updates related to KF5 and Plasma5.

You may want https://launchpad.net/~kubuntu-ppa/+archive/ubuntu/ppa to get updates to 'non-plasma' bits.

I must be missing something here. There have been numerous announcements of the kde 5.2 packages being released and instructions to add the next ppa to get them. I've just looked at the next ppa and its 10 weeks old still. Am I missing something and there hidden somewhere else? Really would like to update this system to 5.2 to see if it fixes some of the bugs I've got at the moment.

        Ta

        Peter.

Ughhh... just can't read... the fine print says I need ppa:kubuntu-ppa/next-backports for the updates.. added it, now downloading 240 packages.. lets see how that goes

The PPA situation has me a little confused. See https://launchpad.net/~kubuntu-ci for example. Not sure how or if that relates to /next-backports.

I keep waiting for claydoh to come explain it to us.

no idea what ci is. The next-backports certainly installed 5.2 for me. It's running OK except for the fact that plasmashell locks up every time it tries to display a popup notification which is VERY annoying (but hey, its bleading edge, so guess I'm going to get cut). Reported as a bug, lets see what happens.

ci is sort of the successor to Neon, it is regular builds of development stuff directly from kde's git. It is not needed unless you want to live on the edge

Stick with next-backports, that will have the latest stable official releases.

Is that in addition to or in lieu of http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-ppa/next/ubuntu?

In lieu of. You can keep the existing one, I don't know if it will see any updates, now that plasma 5 is now actually being backported from Vivid (just like the kubuntu-backports ppa)

I think I really reallly realllly need to redo my ancient blog post on Kubuntu's ppas It is getting confusing.

But what's the point using this ppa but testing Plasma 5? I've read that upgrading Kubuntu 14.10 to 15.04 won't be possible if 14.10 is running Plasma 5...

It is not supported - not necessarily impossible, just likely a butt pain. I may try this on my 14.10 box, the hard drive in it has been upgraded from at least the last 4 releases - no reinstalls- and is running just fine. Not sure yet if I wanna break that cycle, so I'll see what it takes closer to vivid's release and take notes.

anyway, some folks may not run and jump on the Vivid bandwagon right away, but say you have a stable Ubuntu setup but want to try out Plasma 5 on the side, in addition to Unity. Others may want something they know won't get borked during the normal course of a pre-release - video drivers can get wonky at times, or even not work (the proprietary ones often don't until they catch up with Ubuntu's kernel versions, and/or Ubuntu stabilises the kernel so that they can be used)

You're right claydoh, that makes sense!
                          Cheers.

I just now realized Plasma 5.2 was released lol. Used the ppa:kubuntu-ppa/next-backports to install and seems to be a nice improvement in speed and stability. Looking forward to 5.3.
