    Skype not working?

What happened to Skype for Linux?

I'm using 14.04, clicked on the Skype icon (in the K-Menu) to open Skype, it opened, I entered my PW, it looked OK like trying to start, but then it (the Skype window) simply vanished! I repeated this enough times to be convinced that it wouldn't go.

Checked my Skype entry in Muon, Skype is installed, checked for updates, no update, tried to re-install Skype, got a message back saying "Cannot download packages."

I see "they" are working on a Beta Skype for Linux, and a place to download the deb and so on.

Why is my Skype offered in the repositories not working? Did I miss some news about this?

I hear there's many alternatives to Skype, but I use Skype because I communicate with so many people on Windows who use it.

I run Skype 8.10.76.7 under KDE Neon and with no problems.

Yep, that's the deb d/l I referred to. So use the deb file offered by Skype/MicroSoft, not the Skype offered by Muon (in the repositories)?

          I think so, honestly, I don't remember.

Yup, and enjoy all the ramifications of operating through Microsoft servers with "Legal Intercept" installed. LI allows Microsoft to grant access to your "encrypted" video and audio streams to any willing to pay or having a warrant (except for the FBI, CIA and NSA).

If communicating to people with Windows is the concern then you can use Wire (wire.com use their repository, not the ubuntu one). It works on Windows, Linux, iCrap and mobile harassment devices. I don't have any remedy to the "but all mah friends use it" brick wall you get with most people when you're trying to get them to use better software though

If you want to see all the problems some users are having with Skypeforlinux, you can visit
                https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...1da1840?auth=1

Currently this site has 32814 views and 32 pages of comments. A lot of the problems are with LTS systems that are over 4 years old. Also there are problems experienced with AMD processors.

I find that Skypeforlinux is updated each weak and I currently have version 8.11.76.3.

This works for me when I have Skype sessions with friends on MS Windows and iPad systems.

Thanks for your input, NoWorries. I haven't had time to get back to trying to fix my Skype, been distracted with other stuff. I may try un-installing and re-installing, or those deb files download. I'll check into your link. too.

I've just had same problem logging into Skype (4.3) myself here. The odd thing is my Kubuntu 14.04 is still connecting Skype without a problem but my Mint KDE 18.2 Sonya desktop install and my old Mint Xfce 18 Sarah on my ancient laptop refuse to connect now. I'm baffled why my Kubuntu connects without issue (and this PC is cold booted virtually every day) but the Mint installs just won't connect at all.

I don't use Skype myself, but I recently set up and tested it for my mother-in-law on her iPad. The next day it didn't work[emoji769]. So the next time I was in her town and could try things out I eventually found that Microsoft had blacklisted the iPad because it had moved to Australia! The web page that told me this reported the OS, and it appeared to me that the OS was something it considered in triggering the ban.
I had to go through at least two factors of authentication to unblock the Microsoft account.

So, maybe by using several OS's you've tripped a test. I suggest attempting to log on to the Microsoft account using a browser; I didn't begin to find out anything till I did that.

(The iPad hadn't moved more than 2 metres. All I can think of is that her rest home uses an Australian ISP and that confused Microsoft's attempts at geolocation. )

Still haven't had enough free time to investigate how to get Skype working in 14.04 on my PC. But did run into this:

Skype for Linux is broken, and users aren’t happy
Microsoft has been updating Skype on Windows, Windows Phone, iOS, OS X and Android pretty frequently in the past few years. The service’s Linux app, on the other hand, has not been updated for 3 years. Now, apparently, the app has stopped working on Linx (sic) since February 22, 2016 ... Of course, this is a major issue for Linux users. It is worth noting that Microsoft’s Skype apps are also quite buggy on other platforms, including Windows and OS X. I personally have a tonne of issues with Skype on Windows, Windows 10 Mobile, and iOS ...
                        https://mspoweruser.com/skype-for-li...s-arent-happy/

                        And this website:

                        Dear Skype/Microsoft

Using Skype on Linux has been an absolute pain since the Microsoft takeover, but starting from February 22 the Linux client is unable to join calls.

It was a ****ty move to not update the client for 3 years, which resulted in this, mostly. It was annoying that you ignored almost every tweet to @SkypeSupport about Issues with Skype For Linux. But it is absolutely disgraceful that you dropped the Linux client BEFORE any alternatives are available and without telling your users.

We do understand that Linux is a competitor of Microsoft's Windows. But we do not understand why this results in a lack of support for Skype. Linux is actively being used by power users who can not or do not want to use Windows because of a lack of features, and now, those (paying) users who used Skype for both Business and Private purposes are dropped by Skype.

Signed, Lots of angry Linux users
                        http://nickforall.nl/skype/

And, I am still able to use the Skype I have on my (Android, of course) Samsung tablet (but can not use the Skype on my PC in 14.04).

Using Neon. Just did dist-upgrade. Now skype logon was a big blue thing which disappears as soon as I enter my logon info.

So I purged that with dpkg and reinstalled the MS (god forbid!) from https://www.skype.com/en/get-skype/. Installed that. Now it seems to accept my logn, but then displays a blank screen. No matter what I click on in the menu (File, Edit...), nothing happens.

(I groaned when MS took over skype. My wife is swedish and I wondered how any of her compatriots could sink to selling their product to MS.)

                          What to do?

I've installed SkypeForLinux v8.11.0.4 on both my laptop and desktop PC's in the last few days. When I installed it first on the laptop (Mint 18.2 KDE Plasma 5) it did something similar to yours and I thought "Great, MS have done it again" BUT after I restarted the laptop it fixed the problem. Try restarting and hopefully it will fix itself.

Yesterday I installed SkypeForLinux on my desktop (Kubuntu 14.04) as the old version wouldn't log on any more (it seems to link the MS account with the latest version and then disables any attempt to log on with the old version). I didn't have to restart this time and it worked perfectly straight away.
