In 14.04, got an update to Thunderbird yesterday, now 52.1.1 (64 bit), and it seems to fix the Notification functioning (in the Tray). That is, when an email comes in, a notice pops up with a subject line from the email. This was broken for a long time, before yesterday's update. Looks like there's some other changes to T-Bird as well, but I haven't been able to focus on T-Bird too much yet today at 5 am.
There's at least one thread on this subject somewhere, but it is old, so starting this new one as perhaps that update yesterday fixed other stuff people may wish to post on.

) It was quite funny recently seeing both pop-ups occurring with new email alerts. I've disabled the add-on for now. I hope the Thunderbird fix continues to function.
