okay, i got the kmail directory... i wasn't finding it, because instead of extracting it into ~/.kde/share/apps/kmail -- like i was trying to do -- it was actually extracting in ~/home/user/.kde/share/apps/kmail
d'oh... :headdesk:
so, now i've got the kmail directory, first i tried putting it where it was supposed to go. no luck.
then i tried "importing" it with the kmail import wizard. again, no luck.
i subscribed to the KDE-PIM user mailing list, and i would post there, except that my email server doesn't want to do what it's supposed to do, and, unfortunately, there's nothing i can do about it except wait until whatever demon infests the network decides to go elsewhere. 8/
UPDATE: a message has been sent to the KDE-PIM user mailing list... i'll post here when i have a solution.
