I'm using Libreoffice Writer 5 on Kubuntu 14.04. It is very, very slow if I have the comments open to view on the right hand side. By "very slow", I mean that it is unresponsive to any command, and I can easily type faster than it will keep up with. If I hide the comments, there is no problem.
Of course, sometimes, one can just not have the comments open -- but that's not possible if you're using the program to write documents collaboratively.
I have tried all the usual advice about slowness with Libreoffice, viz. changing the memory settings. This has made no difference.
