Why can't I create a new activity?

I'm running Kubuntu 14.04.3 and unable to create a new activity. When I click on "Create activity" and make a selection, nothing ever happens. Only the Main activity is shown. Is there something I need to install to make this work? Any help would be much appreciated.

It turns out that the libkactivities-bin package was not installed for some reason. Because of that, kactivitymanagerd was not running.
