KDE Connect file browsing sometimes fails

I know a number of you use KDE Connect. I love it! But ... sometimes the file browsing feature fails, and I can't find any diagnostics or reliable ways to reconnect.

Latest KDE Connect app (version 0.8h) on Android 4.3
kdeconnect package 0.8-0ppa3+pkg7~ubuntu14.04.1 on Kubuntu 14.04.3 LTS

Usually it all works fine. Shared clipboard and remote mouse/keyboard and ping don't seem to have any problems. But file browsing:
    • sometimes fails even while copying files - I think there's an inactivity timeout but it seems to drop in other cases too. If I can reconnect this isn't very serious
    • sometimes fails to connect with swift error message which I can't quote exactly right now
    • sometimes appears to connect (the message "Examining [Finished]" appears) but sits with Dolphin saying "Accessing device..." for a long time then shows nothing (strike this one ... I figured out that I had in fact changed something recently ... a firewall app on the phone!)

I can't see any logs or diagnostic tools. And I can't see any command-line way of reconnecting file browsing - only the browse button via the system tray icon.

Has anyone else seen this? Any suggestions?

I'd rather be locked out than locked in.

your phone may lock the filesystem when the phone locks. see if you can keep fix they by disabling the autolock/sleep on your phone.

It's not that - I nearly always have the phone plugged into power when using file transfer, and I have the "never sleep" setting.

ok i just know my phone likes to do that sometimes and even if the screen is on and its just locked it sometimes just kills attempts to copy files (MTP i notice if more as i rarly use kdeconnect to copy files)

When it does that, do ping and other functions still work?

Maybe it is something to do with Android killing the process, and these other functions work fine from scratch. Whereas file browsing requires a connection to be set up.
