kde will not start

I can select kde from the dm window and login. Screen goes blank a second and then right back to login. I also have lubuntu and xubuntu installed. They load just fine. Upon boot, the greeter stays a solid white until I click the mouse. Then I see the login. Something is wrong. Not sure what the problem is or how to track it down. Also takes longer to boot on the SSD than win7, so there is definitely a problem
I have tried
apt-get remove --purge kubuntu-desktop
apt-get remove --purge kubuntu-full
then reinstall kubuntu-desktop. Same problem.

uninstalled lightdm installed kdm. no change, except greet looks different which is expected
