Trouble upgrading from KPhotoAlbum 4.4 to 4.6

I had KPhotoAlbum 4.5 (from their ppa) installed and working fine. I am a long time KPA user.

When KPA 4.6 came out, I tried to do the upgrade and it failed.
Made backups and purged KPA. KPA still would not install.
Disabled the ppa and reinstalled KPA 4.4.
Re-enabled the ppa and tried to do the upgrade and it failed.

This is what it looks like:

I tried several different things using apt-get and am getting nowhere.

Apparently KPA depends on KPA which is not installable. That doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.

Do I have to file a bug report and, if so, where? The folks on the KPA list sent me to Kubuntu saying that it looks like a packaging problem, so please don't send me back to KPA.

To make the helping a bit easier

1) Use the command line

The apt will tell what is the problem. In this case you could run the command:

sudo apt-get install kphotoalbum

The install command will install but also upgrade. man apt-get:

install
install is followed by one or more packages desired for installation or upgrading...

To get more information you could try with the command:

sudo apt-get install -o Debug::pkgProblemResolver=yes kphotoalbum

2) Add the full output

You could use the pastebin ( http://pastebin.com ) or other web storing places.

To get the command output use the logsave - man logsave:

Clean the package cache with the command:

sudo apt-get clean

Update the package database:

sudo apt-get update

Install the program.

logsave KPhotoalbum20150219.log sudo apt-get kphotoalbum

Looks like good old dependency hell. Below, I try to install
kphotoalbum, then the thing it needs and then the thing that thing that
needs.

Keeps saying I have held broken packages.

After considerable flailing, this is my current take on what's
happening. Despite that, some of the flailing, including my apt sources,
are listed below.
It looks like my sources/ppas may be fighting each other somehow -
because I'm at KDE 4.14 and some packages are setup for KDE 4.13.

Just for the heck of it, I then run apt-get -f install which sometimes
fixes things.
In the middle of this new updates came through and I had to process them
(not shown).
Finally, I ran some commands following
http://askubuntu.com/questions/14024...r-adding-a-ppa
and got problem resolver output (below) which I don't understand.
Displayed my apt sources in case there's a problem there.
Ran aptitude and a few other things.

Ends up stuck because?: it wants to install libmarblewidget18 which
appears to need an older version of libastro1 than what my system is
setup to install.
Looks like the same problem for marble-plugins and probably kipi-plugins
libmarblewidget18 : Depends: libastro1 (= 4:4.13.3-0ubuntu0.1) but
4:4.14.2-0ubuntu1~ubuntu14.04~ppa1 is to be installed
Recommends: marble-plugins (= 4:4.13.3-0ubuntu0.1)
but 4:4.14.2-0ubuntu1~ubuntu14.04~ppa1 is to be installed

Any idea how I can get things to line up again would be greatly appreciated.

Wholly Moses, I don't think I have ever seen so many ppa repos installed
With that many, it would be more stable and easier to maintain using 14.10 than that mess you got there. Not all ppa's are made by professionals, or even experts. ( I say this from first hand experience )

Have you run a sudo apt-get update at all? Or updated via a package manager?
This is what sticks out to me:

The package wants the latest version (highlighted in red) but sees the older version (in green). The new one is available from the official (K)Ubuntu repositories, and the older one is from the kubuntu-backports ppa. The system is seeing the old one but can't "find" the new one as it isn't in the package database.

The libmarble package is specifically saying it needs libastro version4:4.13.3-blah-blah, but the package system only is seeing 4:13.2-blah-blah.

This is what makes me think updating may be helpful here.

I run Muon almost every day and update the packages. So that's not it. Also, if you'd look again at the release numbers, it says that it requires the 4.13.xxx version while my system wants to install the 4.14.xxx version.

I have the latest KDE (4.14.2) via backports. I've been using that repo for over a year with no problems so far other than a few cosmetic ones like when I empy my Trash, the final pop-up says Undefined Completed.

What I'm hoping the problem is - is that someone said their package requires the 4.13 packages when it should have been 4.13 or newer.

oopsie. My fault there, they tack on too many fours in there. The epoch (the first 4, nothing to do with KDE versions at all) always gets me these days. I need bifocals, it seems. Again, apologies.

The 'Trusty PPA for Dominik Stadler' tells:

PPA for packages that are compiled against pure Trusty without any other dependencies like backports or other PPAs.

and it is building own version of the latest digikam 4.7.0 /1/. The 'Kubuntu Backports' ppa has version 4.0.0 /1/.


A quick test

I'm running the KDE from the Ubuntu repositories, that is, KDE SC 4.13.3.

If I enable the 'Kubuntu Backports' ppa which has the KDE SC 4.14.2 and try to upgrade (simulation):

Solved - ppa issue

I contacted the ppa maintainer who showed me how to correct my ppas and then it upgraded with no issues.

Hi,

you seem to have my non-Kubuntu-Backports PPA set in your sources, but
you also include the Kubuntu-Backports. Previously KPhotoalbum did not
have dependencies on these, but with the recent changes libkgeomap2
was added and this needs to be compiled differently with newer
versions of KDE libs that come with Kubuntu-Backports. Therefore it
should work if you just exchange the following line:

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/dominik-sta...sty-ppa/ubuntu trusty main

with the following

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/dominik-stadler/ppa/ubuntu trusty main

i.e. use the ppa "dominik-stadler/ppa", not "dsta-trusty-ppa", then it
should work.
