Virtual Box Problem

Now I am getting a bit confused. I keep getting asked why do I want to delete the Virtual Box that I have.

What's asking you this?

Does this mean that I can simply install the latest from the Virtual Box repository over the top of it? You can do that with a lot of updates of Windows files.

No. The Debian/Ubuntu packages contain differernt versions of VirtualBox than those from the VirtualBox repository.

If not can you give me the command to remove it.

Before we go this route, there's one other thing you should know. If you choose to use the VirtualBox repository, the advantage is that you'll always have the most recent version. The disadvantage is that you'll need to manually download and install the extension pack each time a new release comes out.

OK, then let's stick with the *buntu/Debian packages. You'll need one more: install virtualbox-guest-additions-iso, which will provide the guest additions that you install inside the virutal machine after you've built it. The package drops an ISO file onto your machine. You'll mount this ISO in the guest and install the additions from it.

As for Windows XP, all those downloads you found are illegal. They might come with cracked product keys produced by some keygen program; Microsoft quickly learns about all of those and invalidates the keys -- meaning you won't be able to register the product. Without registration, you can't download updates. And because Microsoft discontinued XP completely in April this year, there is no legal way that you can obtain that operating system anymore.

You can download 90-day evaluation copies of Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1 from the TechNet Evaluation Center. A Windows 10 technical preview is also available; I'm not sure whether this has an expiration date. For those eval copies of 7 and 8/8.1, you can extend the evaluation period thusly:

• Open an elevated command prompt (that is, a command prompt in Administrator mode)
• Run slmgr /rearm
• Reboot

At any time, you can run slmgr /dlv to find out how many license resets you can do. Typically this has been three for eval copies; not sure if there's been any change there.

This is no problem as I found that I had Windows XP Professional. That being so I also have the keys to open it legitimately.

I am getting confused too, if you have not installed or can not start Windows XP in a VirtualBox machine then there is no need for guest additions yet.

Have you installed Windows XP into VirtualBox using the big blue "New" button (top left) in the VirtualBox Window?

I did as you suggested above and copied the appropriate Debian file into the empty directory. And got the following:

Maybe the problem is that when I went into: /etc/apt/sources.list.d and used mkdir virtual.list, it would not let me do it. So I tried again by using sudo:
sudo mkdir virtual.list, gave the password and it made the directory. Maybe by using sudo I locked off that directory.

Well I finally got XP working in Virtual Box. I wondered around on youtube and found the following:

It was sane and easy to follow. I put my XP disc into the DVD drive and followed his instructions,
There are some things that I would like to change. For instance when I click on full screen, the background goes to full screen but XP remains a small rectangle.
This limitation is a relatively a minor nuisance. I now have the facility of a dual booting machine without the dual boot.

You probably don't have Guest Additions installed in the vm.

Boot the XP vm, then I think it is the Devices menu, Install Guest Additions.

Thank you I was wondering about a Guest Addition. Hopefully that will also solve the lack of a USB port. I was sure that when I set it up I had set it ti have such. I would also like to have it go full screen. On my wife's Microsoft I have a virtual box with MInt in it, which goes to full screen when it is loaded.

I went back to Settings and re-set the USB 2.00 and then when I started VB it crashed and told me that I needed to install:
"Oracle VM Virtual Box Extension Pack", I googled looking how to do that and one site said I should see what I have already, using sudo VBoxManage list extpacks
The result follows, which means I have the pack in general but it failed operate.

Your extension pack is not the same version as your VirtualBox install.

I did the above and got nothing but it did open Virtual Box Manager, with the following message:
william78@william78:~$ VirtualBox -- help

So then I put a sudo in front of it and got the following:

william78@william78:~$ sudo VirtualBox -- help

And once again it opened the Virtual Box Manager.

Following on, the Virtual Magic that I installed was:

virtualbox-4.3_4.3.20-96996~Ubuntu~raring_amd64.deb

and I found the following for the VM 4.3 series:

Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-4.3.20-96996.vbox-extpack

However, (there always seems to be a however in these things) When I originally listed this command it gave me the following:

$sudo VBoxManage list extpacks

Are these two different packs, will it cause a problem if I install the pack that I found over the one that is installed?
