Just ran hp-setup and up came the scanner. All of the work by others, especially you oshunluvr, is deeply appreciated. Thank you all and a Merry Christmas to you all.

I am using Kubuntu 14.10. I just tried the nmap command with sP parameters, and it does not see my nas and printer either, while I can just ping them with the ping command.

Does the fact that my pc is connected via wireless has something to do with this ?

AFAIK it should work - wireless or not. Of course, unless you're having issues of some sort there's no reason to muck about.
