A question about an HLIP update

A notice came telling me that HPLIP-3.14.10 update was available. When I started to install it (I am using Kubuntu 14.04) a notice came up telling me that I was running into a conflict with a previous HPLIP version and did I want to go ahead.

So my question is, should I simply go ahead and over ride whatever is present in KB 14.04?

You are probably ok, but we would really need the full, exact warning messages you get in order to see what the problem is.

As far as I can tell, the hplip in Ubuntu is still at 3.14.3, so you must have installed from a secondary resource or ppa. This is likely the reason fire the messages, as the packages may have a misconfiguration, or are made to be "generic".

Unless you have a printer that is not working, I wouldn't install the new stuff until you know it's not going to break things. Usually new hplip versions are just adding support for new hardware.

Thank you, I get the picture now. My printer is working fine so I will leave the update alone. Just wish now that I could get rid of the notice every time I boot up.

I am curious as to how you are getting prompts for this, as the version you are seeing is not available in 14.04, not without external sources. It might be safe to install it, but not being able to see the actual warnings, or how you installed hplip.....You can "hold" a package at the current version using Muon Package Manager - you can use the filters on the left to only show upgradeable packages. Select a package, right-click it and select "Lock at Current Version"

OOPS! I failed to note the login bit.. this is NOT coming with the normal Ubuntu update notifications, I'm taking it, right?

Well that is easy to fix if HPLIP itself is asking to update.
Open HPLIP Toolbox >> Configure >> Preferences >> System Tray Icon ans make sure that the "Check and notify HPLIP updates" box is un-checked. This might be all you need, and you won't need to follow the last post I made to "hold" a package.

I need to get my glasses cleaned. There is a button on the notice that will stop it appearing.
