    HP 2050 J510 scanner?

First, in 12.04, I've been using the HP Deskjet 2050 J510 printer with scanner -- no problems.

Now, I'm setting up 14.04, have added this printer, hplip shows up nicely, BUT ... under the printer Actions menu, there is no option to Scan; in fact, nowhere can I find in the hp-gui menus an option to Scan. This sounds like there is no driver for scanning available in 14.04 (for the Deskjet HP2050 J510). Any one else notice this? or, how can I investigate further?

According to which, scan is supported for 14.04.
I suppose that means I just have to find the scan module of the driver or some such.

I'll test that next (later). (I was just testing to see if you would catch that ;-) )
        Thanks.

Check to see if libsane-hpaio is installed, and run the command
          Code:
          scanimage -L
          to see what shows up.

            Thanks.

            xsane was not installed.

            libsane was installed.

            libsane-hpaio was installed.

            ~$ scanimage -L
            device `hpaio:/usb/Deskjet_2050_J510_series?serial=CN24C3P76805D1' is a Hewlett-Packard Deskjet_2050_J510_series all-in-one

            So, I installed xsane.

            And it works now:
Scan shows up as an option in the hplip Actions list.
And I tested scan to confirm it's working, and it is.

Many thanks. That's one 14.04-setup task down.

xsane may be required to scan from within hplip, but the scanner will work with whatever gui scanner app, such as skanlite -which you should already have in a default Kubuntu install, and xsane - which hplip is specifically looking for. So, technically speaking, your scanner works just fine, it was the hplip that was "broken" - I wonder why Xsane isn't a dependency for it, since it wants that for scan jobs

Heck, on my HP Photosmart C5280 printer/scanner, I didn't even need to install HPLIP gui stuff - the HP printer drivers are already there, as is the libsane-hpaio sane scanner driver so it all works ootb, though without the fancy extras I seldom use.

Thanks for that info, claydoh. Yes, skanlite works, started from Konsole ... but who would have known? Wait! There's more: Skanlite is in the K-menu, applications > graphics!
In 12.04, apparently xsane WAS installed automatically with hplip, as a dependency. But, on my system, not so in 14.04.

                Thanks.

Reading claydoh's #7, another thing: I could not find hplip after installing 14.04; I looked in many places, I even tried hplip in Konsole. Not to say it wasn't there. But, I turned on the printer so Kubuntu would see it, and, magically, hplip shows up to help! But then xsane was to be installed seperately (as we talked about above), and I noticed it pulled in a long list of other programs, too. (Versus: In 12.04 here, after installing 12.04, I had both hplip and xsane already installed and ready to go.)
