14.04 updated and the printer/scanner is an HP 8600 Pro Deluxe. <---love this printer. It's been working perfectly since day one.
Today, I went to scan using xsane and the image was totally gray. Really gray. So I tried rebooting the system and the printer. Used color and gray scans. Used the ADF and Flatbed - all the same. I was just about convinced the scanner bulb had problems when I tried using scanlight instead. Worked fine. Used scanimage from the command line - worked fine.
I realize that using another program is a solution, but Xsane has mad features and it worked fine two days ago! I've had a couple updates since then, but nothing scan related that I recall.
There are a couple things I've changed in the last couple of days that may have some impact - but remember, scanlight and scanimage still work normally.
1: I changed the network connection. Formerly, the printer was USB connected to my Ubuntu 12.04.5 server and the server hosted the scanner on the network. This setup causes the hp-sendfax features to not be available to networked computers, so I re-configured the printer and it now resides directly on the network.
2: I enabled cloud printing through HP ePrint and Google Cloud Print. These were formally not in use.
So I think the biggest difference is the network connection. Previously using the server as host I assume the server drivers were the ones addressing the printer. Now the scanning PC would be in use. Note that Xsane uses a net.conf and a backend (hpaio in this case) to talk to networked scanners so I don't know if the driver comment is correct or not - it may be the scanning PC drivers in either config. Xsane searches the network for a scanner at every launch do there's no setup config on the front end.
I've scanned the 'net and can't find anyone else with this issue. I look forward to your comments!
Images so you can see exactly what I'm talking about.
