Unable to get past sign in screen

I was updating mysql to a newer version and in the instructions, "remove old mysql version". Then remove all. It appears I've removed more then the old version of mysql, When the desktop boots, the sign on screen displays, password is entered, the sign on screen disappears leaving the back drop. I'm able to get to the terminal.

Is there a way to restore the desktop?

After you log in, can you get to a TTY (old command prompt)?

Try Ctrl Alt F1, and remember if you have other functions on your F keys this may be Fn Ctrl Alt F1.

Then type the startx and see what happens...

OK, you might find some useful info here:

        Code:
        cat ~/.xsession-errors
Hopefully that will give us a nudge in the right direction

I was pretty much stumped on troubleshooting this issue and an issue with mysql, I reinstalled Kubuntu and solved all issues.

Thank you for all your efforts,
