    Strange Kate problem

Hi i'm using 14.04 x64 and randomly i will get an error when launching the kate text editor.

    "Unable to launch /usr/bin/kate"

It is only random and also the archival program ARK sometime loads an archive but when i select extract and the browse box pops up it just stays blank then errors out then reloading the archive and browsing works fine on the second attempt

Only recently this has started happening.

    Any help appreciated

How are you launching them? Menu? Panel icon? Desktop icon? Konsole?

Have you by chance, used sudo to launch GUI apps from the console recently, like Dolphin, to do editing of root owned files?

To answer the first question i open them by either double clicking a text file or in ARK's case a zip/rar file.
To answer Snowhog i do have a script that i can right click in dolphin to open folder/files as root to edit them yes

Does your script use 'sudo' or 'kdesudo'? I'm assuming it launches Kate.

If it is your script or basically any other type script you can open it directly with an editor and look at the script...... This seems a strange question to me

Had Kubuntu on most of the morning and no error yet, it's just a random thing.

I've also seen this on my 14.04 32bit installation. No solution and rebooting usually fixes it. It does appear to be random, but I suspect there is an action sequence that triggers this problem. I'm still not seeing any pattern but I'm following this thread in case a fix is revealed.

their is a bug where if you open dolphin as root (kdesudo dolphin) and open a text file it will open kate 1 time per login after that you get the "could not launch /usr/bin/kate" error.

I have never had this happen with the root-actions-service-menu however.
