New 14.04.1 Install - Problem With KATE Editor...

Hi,

I recently installed Kubuntu 14.04.1 64Bit onto my slow thin client.
The OS installed properly and it is fully updated.

I have a problem with KATE text editor.
I am trying to add [Save All] to the toolbar on top but it does not work:
(see screenshot below)

Is this a know issue with KATE on 14.04.1 ?
I am a video game programmer and really need [Save All] to work now.
Any help would be appreciated!

Check Kate's Settings > Configure Kate... > Plugins to see if you have Tab Bar checked. Just a thought.

That is telling! First, you should not(never) use sudo to launch a graphical application. It can/does create problems for your user account by changing ownership on files within your users /home directory to root.

Open a console. MAKE SURE you are in your user home directory. Then type:

sudo chown -R username:username *

Where username is your username. Example, using my username:

sudo chown -R paul:paul *

Exit the console and re-launch Kate normally, from the K Menu. See if you can now add the Save All button.

Some additional information:
instead of "sudo kate", use "kdesudo kate" (recommended) or if you really want to use sudo, use an option that sets $HOME properly, like -i ("sudo -i kate")

sudo chown -R username:username *

Avoid using wildcards (especially bare wildcards) with potentially undoable commands. Wildcards are more prone to unexpected behaviour (typos and being in a wrong directory can be disastrous, also it might not work as expected on weirdly named files (like "--file") and depending on the shell's globbing options might not do what you want (if dotglobbing is not on, * will pass hidden files/folders)

It's better to use a path "sudo chown -R username:username /home/username"

These will remove the configs for all kde apps, it would probably be preferable to only remove kate's files, see my previous post.

Then type:

sudo updatedb

Then reinstall Kate:

sudo apt-get install --reinstall kate

Exit the console. Log out and log back in. Launch Kate.

Sort of redundant, updating locate database and reinstalling kate shouldn't be necessary

I knew better. That's the problem when you know to well how to do it "yourself" and on "your PC". What I know doesn't always make it to my fingers when typing on the keyboard!!

Thanks! I did what you originally suggested and rebooted and now my desktop and panel are gone?
How I recover my system without reinstalling from DVD?

sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop

If your informed that it's already installed, then type:

sudo apt-get install --reinstall kubuntu-desktop
